On March 25, 2025, Chosun Ilbo highlighted the altruism of South Korean celebrities, including actors Yim Si-wan and Lee Chae-won, who made significant donations to assist victims of the catastrophic wildfires that ravaged Gyeongsang Province beginning March 21, 2025. These wildfires led to widespread devastation, forcing numerous residents to evacuate their homes.
Amid this crisis, Yim Si-wan, known for his role in *Squid Game 2*, generously donated 30 million KRW (approximately $20,444). He remarked on the gravity of the situation, stating:
“I thought the pain of those who lost their homes due to the sudden wildfires must be great, so I offered a small contribution. I hope it brings some comfort during this difficult time,”
In addition to Yim’s contribution, well-known entertainment figure Yoo Jae-suk, host of *Running Man*, donated 50 million KRW ($34,074) to the Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association, furthering his commitment to this initiative, having contributed over 1 billion KRW (around $681,473) to the charity in total.
Other prominent personalities, including WINNER’s Kim Jin-woo and broadcaster Shim Jin-hwa, joined the fundraising efforts, showing solidarity with those affected by the disaster.
Entertainment Industry Unites to Combat Wildfire Crisis in South Korea
The wildfires erupted approximately 300 kilometers (186 miles) south of Sancheong in South Gyeongsang Province, prompting the South Korean government to issue a red alert in Ulsan city, as well as North and South Gyeongsang provinces. By March 23, the blazes had consumed vast swathes of land, escalating the national emergency.
Reportedly, Lee Chan-won made a notable donation of 100 million KRW (around $68,157) directed to the Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association to assist victims in the severely impacted Yeongnam region.
Similarly, Kim Jin-woo from WINNER pledged 100 million KRW, while comedian and MBN host Lee Seung-yoon contributed 10 million KRW (approximately $6,817). Kim Jin-woo shared his sentiments about the crisis:
“I heard that many neighbors in various regions are suffering greatly from the wildfires. Rather than remain still, I chose to do what I can right now. I hope it will be well used where it’s needed.”
Broadcaster Shim Jin-hwa also contributed 10 million KRW and took initiative to educate the public about donation opportunities. She detailed ways through which citizens could help:
“If there are those who wish to donate, 1. Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association 2. Korean Red Cross 3. Gyeongbuk Community Chest of Korea (A single phone call can contribute 3,000 won, and a text message costs 2,000 won. There are many simple ways to donate, so for those considering it, please keep this in mind).”
Numerous other celebrities, including Chun Woo-hee and Yoo Byung-jae, have also stepped forward to provide aid.
As reported by CNN on March 26, 2025, the fires have resulted in the tragic loss of life, claiming the lives of 19 individuals, including four civil servants tackling the inferno. The destruction extends to culturally significant sites, such as the 1,300-year-old Gounsa temple in Uiseong County, which was completely destroyed.
Currently, the inferno has devastated approximately 17,398 hectares (close to 43,000 acres), affecting Hahoe Folk Village in Andong, a UNESCO World Heritage site. In response to the disaster, South Korea has mobilized over 10,000 firefighters, police officers, and civil service personnel, with reports indicating that 68% of the wildfires have been contained as of March 26, 2025.
This is not the first time South Korea has faced such a catastrophic event; a similar disaster occurred in 2019, prompting support from various K-pop idols and actors, including BTS’ j-hope and IU, who collectively aided victims through charitable contributions.
Fans, particularly BTS ARMY and Kang Daniel’s supporters, also significantly contributed funds for donations to assist wildfire victims in 2019.
