In the world of wrestling, some performers leave a lasting impression, defining the eras in which they compete, while others blaze trails that influence generations to come. Melina, a former WWE Superstar, epitomizes this dual legacy as the first multi-time WWE Divas Champion and Women’s Champion, actively participating in groundbreaking women’s matches.
As she prepares to celebrate the 20th anniversary of her WWE debut and her appearance at the River City Wrestling Con in June, Melina shared her thoughts with ScreenRant on her remarkable journey, legacy, and the significance of making Evolution PLEs a permanent fixture in WWE.
Two Decades Ago: Melina’s Impact on the Divas Era

Debuting in 2005, Melina found herself at the heart of the women’s wrestling revolution, albeit unknowingly at the time. Reflecting on her early expectations, she expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to be part of WWE.
“One part of me was ‘whatever I got, I was grateful for it,’ because back in those days, as someone of ethnicity, I felt like I didn’t see a lot of people who looked like me represented. So, even if I was only there for a short while, it was special for me that some people in my family could witness it. Many can’t say they’ve been involved with WWE, even for a brief moment. Just being part of it felt monumental, especially considering my cultural background. I’m thrilled that the entire journey was beautiful. I sought to just learn how to be a wrestler, as there was limited opportunity on the independent circuit, particularly with a lack of female wrestlers.”
Melina’s accolades extend beyond championships; she was among the first women to participate in a Falls Count Anywhere and an “I Quit”match, which are remarkable milestones in her career. She expressed her appreciation for being given such significant opportunities.
“That’s an honor because to me, that’s bigger than any award or title. They trusted me to tell a story through my character and to possess the psychology to make others shine in the ring,”she explained. “Instead of focusing on flashy moves, I learned to craft narratives that highlighted my opponents’ strengths while concealing their weaknesses.”
Acknowledging Influences: Honoring Those Who Inspired Her

Reflecting on her early days, Melina acknowledged the influence of wrestling pioneers who helped shape her career, leading to unforgettable moments, like the first women’s “I Quit”match alongside Beth Phoenix at One Night Stand 2008.
“Sensational Sherri was a massive influence for me—growing up watching ‘Glow’ and seeing her in action lit a spark. She was a visionary, even during limitations of the time where women’s wrestling faced bans. Her performances were captivating, and her understanding of wrestling psychology set the bar,”she stated.
“I also admired Bull Nakano and Madusa, particularly recalling a match that etched itself into my memory and inspired my own craft, especially during the ‘I Quit’ match.”
WWE has recently intensified efforts to train the next generation of superstars, emphasizing identification of independent talent through initiatives like the WWEID program and its partnership with TNA Wrestling. Melina reflected on a valuable lesson imparted by Bubba Ray Dudley, which continues to resonate with her.
“Bubba told me, ‘You’re planting seeds everywhere you go as if it’s the first time anyone is seeing you.’ This resonates deeply with me, both in wrestling and life. Every match is your opportunity to connect, and you never know who is watching.”

Although Melina was a celebrated multi-time champion, she was absent from WWE’s groundbreaking Evolution event in 2018, which spotlighted women’s wrestling across generations. This innovative event was widely acclaimed as a necessary and overdue step in WWE’s progress.
With reports suggesting another Evolution PLE may be on the horizon, Melina expressed her enthusiasm not just for a repeat of this event, but for its annual recurrence.
“It’s been far too long since the first Evolution. It felt like a one-time deal, but with all these talented women on the roster, we need a platform where they can showcase what they can do. An event like this fosters camaraderie and highlights women’s shared strength in wrestling,”she asserted.
Melina’s Legacy and That Iconic Royal Rumble Reception

Despite her absence from Evolution, Melina made a triumphant return to WWE as a surprise entrant in the 2022 Royal Rumble, eliciting an overwhelming cheer from the crowd that highlighted her enduring legacy.
“I had plans for a match with Sasha, but everything changed last minute. I was worried about getting cut, but thankfully, I still got my entrance,”she said. “Hearing the crowd erupt made me emotional. It reaffirmed my belief that I made an impact.”
“That night was filled with joy—I felt fulfilled. To be remembered and cherished, even after a career filled with doubts, was incredibly rewarding.”
Excited about upcoming fan conventions, Melina is particularly looking forward to participating in the River City Wrestling Con starting June 7th and the Divas and Drag Wrestling! event prior to WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas. This event aims to celebrate the vocal LGBTQIA+ support Melina has received throughout her career. She mentioned the warmth and camaraderie felt during her last River City experience.
“I cherish positive environments filled with kind people. The families who attend are lovely, and I appreciate their support. Thank you all for your kindness,”she conveyed.
When asked to encapsulate her career in a single word, Melina reflected on the multitude of experiences rather than pinpointing a specific moment, emphasizing the emotional connection she hopes her legacy communicates to fans.
“There isn’t a singular moment that defines my career. It’s about the energy I brought and how people felt. I want them to remember Melina as someone who invoked emotion, whether through joy or strength.”
Throughout her impressive career, Melina has established herself as a trailblazer in wrestling, leaving an indelible impact on the industry while redefining the essence of legacy. Now, she stands at an exciting crossroads, ready to share her wealth of knowledge with the new generation of Superstars poised to take center stage.
