Wonder Woman’s Resurrection Plans: What DC Has in Store After Her Shocking Death

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Wonder Woman #19! The eternal battle for Wonder Woman takes a grave turn as death approaches her once again. Diana faces the Sovereign in a struggle that raises questions about her fate and how she might defy death this time.

For some time now, Diana has endured severe trials. The secret king of America has relentlessly tormented her, disparaged her people, and even taken the life of her greatest love. As she gears up to conclude her brutal conflict with the Sovereign, anticipation builds around how DC Comics will reveal her impending demise and subsequent return.

Wonder Woman Lies Dead On Themyscira

In Wonder Woman #19, crafted by Tom King and illustrated by Daniel Sampere, the impactful journey culminates as the Sovereign prepares to reveal how he was defeated by Diana. However, his revelations take a darker turn when Wonder Woman’s daughter, Trinity, seeking clarity, binds him in the Lasso of Truth. She presses for details regarding her mother’s final confrontation with the Sovereign.

To Trinity’s shock, the Sovereign divulges a horrifying truth: all the Amazons have perished, including Wonder Woman herself, who met her end by a dagger thrust into her heart.

The Sovereign taunts Trinity, teasing details about the dagger’s design and its connection to his family. Despite the grim news, Trinity insists on hearing the Sovereign’s full account. He recounts how Wonder Woman, in a turbulent encounter at the White House, summoned her own fury to forge a similar dagger, compelling him to carve ‘Liar’ into his chest—a scar that he continues to wear as a reminder of his defeat.

Astoundingly, the entire chaotic setup of the Wonder War emerges from Wonder Woman’s humiliation of the Sovereign instead of simply his defeat. In another part of the world, Wonder Woman’s former rival, Emelie, is giving birth with Etta Candy by her side. Emelie names her daughter Lyssa, symbolically echoing her possible connection to the Sovereign and hinting at a dark future where she may be the one to end Wonder Woman.

Curiously, this wouldn’t mark Wonder Woman’s first brush with death. As an emblem of strength, Diana has faced numerous formidable foes throughout her storied existence. In the landmark event, Crisis on Infinite Earths, she was struck down by the Anti-Monitor’s energy, reverting her to her clay origins. Nevertheless, the reimagining of the DC Universe under George Pérez allowed for her remarkable rebirth.

This defeat, however, wouldn’t be permanent. In the War of the Gods, Diana faced Circe, whose magical powers stripped her back to clay once more. Much like before, her demise was only a temporary setback, as she ultimately overcame Circe and returned from the realm of limbo. Additionally, her struggle with the demon lord Neron resulted in another dramatic showdown where Wonder Woman was killed.

This fatal encounter unfolded in Wonder Woman #125 (1997). However, the gods had other plans for their champion, and they resurrected her as a goddess of truth. Over time, she faced further near-death experiences, notably during the Blackest Night saga when she temporarily became a Black Lantern, only to be revived by the love-laden powers of a Star Sapphire ring. Most recently, Diana sacrificed herself in Dark Nights: Death Metal to vanquish the Batman Who Laughs, opting to retain her mortality despite the invitation to join the Quintessence.

The Possibilities: Divine Aid, Time Travel, or Unexpected Twists?

As speculation mounts about the Wonder War, it’s established that Lyssa, the Sovereign’s daughter, is on her quest to confront the Amazons. The Sovereign epitomizes everything contrary to Wonder Woman’s values, such as deceitfulness. Although the Lasso of Lies may no longer be a part of his arsenal, both the Sovereign and Lyssa are adept manipulators. It is plausible that they would stage Wonder Woman’s death to distract Trinity and facilitate Lyssa’s lethal plan against her.

If this tragic demise is indeed real, what happens next? One likely scenario involves Trinity beseeching the gods to resurrect her mother along with the fallen Amazons. Yet, the reliability of the gods comes into question; in past encounters, they have proved to be fickle allies. With a forthcoming miniseries poised to explore these themes, the events surrounding Wonder Woman’s potential demise are yet to unfold.

The highly anticipated miniseries Trinity: Daughter of Wonder Woman is set to follow Trinity as she navigates through time in search of her father. While the dynamics of how she might access time travel are undisclosed, her adventures through various epochs of DC history may yield critical insights. It’s conceivable that Trinity, sensing the futility of combating the Wonder War in its current timeline, opts to intervene in the past to thwart the Sovereign’s plot regarding Lyssa and, in turn, save her mother’s life.

Despite the somber implications of Wonder Woman’s current fate, this isn’t her first encounter with death, nor is it likely to be her last. The expectation is strong that Diana will either rise from this ordeal or circumvent it altogether. Given Trinity’s significant presence in the ongoing story, her involvement in shaping her mother’s destiny seems inevitable. Ultimately, readers will have to remain patient as they await the resolution of this shocking turn in Wonder Woman‘s saga.
