Why I Invested 400 Hours in Final Fantasy XIV and How It Supports Square Enix’s Game Division

Square Enix has disclosed that Final Fantasy XIV (FF14) stands out as one of its top financial successes. After dedicating nearly 400 hours to the game, I can certainly appreciate why. My journey with FF14 began almost ten years ago, and while I’ve played intermittently since then, my total playtime is modest by comparison. A significant portion of those hours was spent indulging in the attractions at the Gold Saucer, and I have yet to explore the latest expansion, Dawntrail.

Despite my relatively low playtime, it’s clear to me why FF14 has flourished. While I was slightly surprised to learn that its sales have eclipsed those of the much-anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the ongoing success of FF14 over the years is entirely justified. It may not always be flawless, but it consistently corrects its missteps and embraces innovation. FF14, with its imperfections, serves as a blueprint for Square Enix’s future endeavors regarding its flagship franchises.

Recently, Square Enix published a financial results summary for its fiscal year ending on March 31, 2025, and in this report, FF14 demonstrated remarkable performance. The financial results categorize Square’s recent output into three areas: HD games, which include PC and console releases like SaGa: Emerald Beyond and Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake; mobile and PC browser games, such as Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis; and MMOs, covering itself and the Japan-only Dragon Quest X. Interestingly, although the HD gaming category faces declining net sales, the reinvigorated interest in the Dragon Quest 3 remake contributed to Square’s return to profit.

In the mobile sector, however, Square struggled with performance, citing “operating income sharply down on weaknesses in existing titles.” This indicates that mobile segment games have underperformed, yet it clearly contrasts with the positive trajectory in the MMO category. Here, Square Enix reported a surge in operating income, specifically crediting the successful launch of Dawntrail. The MMO category saw year-over-year growth, boasting an increase of 8.2 billion yen (approximately $56 million) in net sales and a rise of 2.6 billion yen (around $18 million) in operating income, highlighting a notable success amid the company’s other ventures.

Understanding the Appeal of Final Fantasy XIV

The Triumph of FF14

At the heart of FF14’s success is its undeniable quality. It captivates players with a compelling narrative, stunning graphics, enchanting music, and engaging gameplay. Players forge emotional connections with characters while relishing the intricate dungeon designs and the thrill of character progression through various classes. This captivating blend is precisely what lured me into the game and motivates my continued participation over the years.

Moreover, FF14’s profitability continues to rise due to its unique position as an MMO. Unlike many of Square Enix’s typically single-player RPGs, which offer one-time purchases and sporadic DLC opportunities, FF14 implements a subscription model. After an extended free trial, players must subscribe to access ongoing content. Additionally, new expansions are released approximately every couple of years, necessitating further purchases, thus ensuring a steady revenue stream from its player base.

Although FF14 features microtransactions, these primarily cater to cosmetic enhancements, having little impact on gameplay experience. To justify this expenditure, the game frequently introduces new content, keeping the gameplay dynamic and fresh. As an expansive MMO, FF14 caters to a diverse player base, including hardcore raiders, crafters, roleplayers, and casual gamers alike. Everyone can find a niche within the FF14 ecosystem, each receiving regular content updates—if not with every update, then certainly with regularity.

It’s important to remember that the game’s journey hasn’t been all smooth sailing. FF14’s initial launch was notorious for its many shortcomings, leading to a complete overhaul with the reimagined version, A Realm Reborn. While I could delve deeper into this transformative success story, it’s worth noting that the tough lessons learned seem to have instilled a proactive mindset among the developers.

The FF14 team is notably attentive to community feedback, striving not to appease every request but adeptly identifying genuine issues and integrating solutions into their updates. Even longstanding quality-of-life concerns have been addressed, helping to mitigate player frustration and promote consistent game improvements. The evolution of FF14 from its early days to the present is astounding—a testament to a game remaining relevant and engaging even after a decade.

Ultimately, one needn’t rely solely on impressive sales figures to grasp the essence of FF14’s success. Every time I log in, I feel it. Standing in the lively environment of Limsa, enveloped by the sounds of players chatting, showcasing unique outfits, and organizing live concerts creates the sense that FF14 thrives not just through its mechanics but also through the vibrant interactions fostered by its community.

There’s an essential lesson here: while not every Square Enix title should pivot to the MMO model, FF14’s achievements stem from its quality, the developers’ responsiveness to player desires, and the robust, thriving community it nurtures. I look forward to Final Fantasy XIV serving as inspiration for future Square Enix releases.
