While I Appreciate Wes, FBI: International Should Prioritize a Different Character

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for FBI: International season 3, episode 16.

When introducing new characters, writers face the challenge of developing them into compelling figures that resonate with audiences. In season 4 of FBI: International, the character Wes Mitchell (portrayed by Jesse Lee Soffer) steps in as the new leader following the departure of Scott Forrester (Luke Kleintank). This character has certainly received considerable focus and detail regarding his backstory, but this has inadvertently sidelined other important characters, notably Amanda Tate (Christina Wolfe).

Guest Agents Enrich Wes’ Narrative

Wes Receives 7 Episodes for Character Development

Wes and Ella in FBI: International season 4, episode 1

In the seven episodes leading up to the current season, the Fly Team has interacted with three guest agents, all of whom are linked to Wes in various ways. Notable characters include Tyler Booth (Jay Hayden), whose arrival stirred tension due to his past with Wes, and Riley Quinn (Veronica St. Clair), who has a dual agenda when sent to Budapest. She is there to help with a pivotal criminal capture while also trying to connect Wes to an issue from his past during his time at Quantico.

The latest episode brought back Wes’ ex-girlfriend, Ella Driscoll (Jade Tailor). Initially appearing to have ulterior motives for reconnecting with Wes, her story ultimately intertwines deeply with the case at hand. As the episode concluded, Wes had to confront the emotional remnants of that relationship, indicating Ella’s lingering impact on his present life.

The Need to Elevate Amanda’s Storyline

The recent episode of FBI: International season 4, episode 16, sheds light on Amanda’s personal struggles, which resonate with her professional duties. When Wes sought her advice regarding a potential conflict of interest involving Ella, Amanda made her priorities clear by emphasizing the importance of putting the case first—especially considering her status as a mother.

Throughout earlier seasons, Amanda’s backstory has been touched upon, such as when she faced the terrifying possibility of losing her daughter during a custody battle. With the intervention of Raines (Carter Redwood), Amanda found a resolution that underscored her strong connection to the team.

Moreover, Amanda’s participation in undercover operations highlights the tension between her dual roles as a devoted mother and a dedicated FBI agent. The current focus on her experiences, particularly during crises that involve children, reinforces her character’s depth and emotional stakes.

Addressing Core Characters for a Fitting Series Conclusion

Ensuring Closure for Every Character

Tension in FBI: International

While the creators of FBI: International could not have anticipated that season 4 would be the last, dedicating excessive airtime to develop Wes at the expense of other characters has raised concerns. As the show possibly heads towards its conclusion without a season 5, it is imperative to prioritize character exploration beyond Wes.

Amanda, in particular, has received minimal development compared to her colleagues. With little insight into her aspirations apart from her role as an attentive mother, the audience is left wanting more. She has not had the opportunity for personal growth or interaction with the team that would solidify her place among them.

Hints of a budding relationship between Amanda and Wes emerged in the latest episodes; however, they feel rushed and unearned, lacking the emotional foundation necessary for viewers to resonate with them. A deeper exploration of Amanda’s backstory and her motivations is crucial for creating a satisfying conclusion for all characters involved.

For FBI: International to deliver a compelling finale, the narrative must shift focus from Wes to enrich and complete the journeys of all core characters, particularly highlighting Amanda’s story that deserves spotlight and resolution.
