  • Despite unreciprocated feelings for Enid, Eugene’s lovable and sincere nature warrants a meaningful romantic narrative.

In the popular series Wednesday, viewers are introduced to Eugene Ottinger, the founder and sole member of Nevermore Hummers, during the pivotal Outreach Day. He attempts to capture Wednesday Addams’ interest in beekeeping—a unique and ancient art. Eugene’s quirky charm and friendly disposition offer a stark contrast to Wednesday’s stoic character, enriching the dynamic of their emerging friendship. Intrigued by Eugene’s earnestness, Wednesday finds herself drawn to their unique bond, which is heartwarming and endearing.

Initially, Eugene turns to Wednesday for protection against bullies from the Pilgrim World during Outreach Day. However, in a surprising twist, it is Eugene who ultimately rescues her from Marilyn Thornhill’s impending threat. In the gripping finale, as Thornhill prepares to attack Wednesday, Eugene uses his swarm of bees as an unexpected weapon, showcasing his heroic potential and returning the favor for her past support. As a psychic with bee-controlling abilities, Eugene stands out as one of Nevermore’s unexpected heroes, deserving his own storyline separate from the main arc. A romantic subplot featuring someone outside his immediate friend group would further elevate his character, adding depth to his story.

In Season 1, Chapter II, titled “Woe is the Loneliest Number,”Principal Weems seeks to engage Wednesday in extracurricular activities outside her usual detective role. She compiles a list of clubs with available spots and urges Wednesday to select one by day’s end. Wednesday explores various clubs, beginning with Bianca Barclay and Xavier Thorpe, before finally meeting Eugene.

During their introduction, Eugene inquires if Wednesday is ready to experience the “sting”of bees, sparking her interest. Immediately drawn to the excitement, Wednesday enthusiastically dons a beekeeping suit, fully embracing her new adventure.

Eugene Runs The Show Solo

Eugene wins the audience’s affection when he explains to Wednesday that in the world of bees, it is the female bees that rule, demonstrating his intelligence and sincerity. Despite his initial lack of direction in the show, his relationship with Wednesday buoyantly shifts his trajectory. In her, he discovers his first genuine friendship, even as he tries to impress Wednesday’s lively roommate, Enid Sinclair.

In Chapter III, “Friends or Woe,”Eugene, feeling isolated, partners with Wednesday for Outreach Day. After Wednesday swaps her assignment with Enid, she finds herself at Pilgrim World, where Eugene is stationed, while Enid heads to a local antique store to be near Ajax Petropolus.

During this outing, Wednesday stands up for Eugene against bullies, reaffirming their unspoken bond where “Hummers stick together.”Later, she even borrows his retainer to break into the meeting house to investigate Joseph Crackstone, revealing hints of Eugene’s feelings for Enid. When asked about his retainer, Eugene amusingly states:

“What, why? Your teeth are really good. Not as straight or white as Enid’s but still —”

This moment, however, highlights a growing conflict, as Enid and Ajax develop a flirtation, while Eugene’s affection for Enid appears unrequited. His admiration for Enid feels misplaced, as the two do not seem to resonate, suggesting that Eugene deserves a romantic interest who appreciates him equally.

Eugene Deserves Someone Who Likes Him Back

Eugene’s enthusiasm is palpable whenever Enid visits his shed. He strives to impress her with his beekeeping expertise, but her perception limits him to being just Wednesday’s friend. His efforts to gain her attention sometimes lead to missed opportunities; for example, he offers Wednesday honey to pass along to Enid, hoping to secure a date for the Rave’N. However, Wednesday reminds him that their personalities set them apart from typical adolescent behavior.

Despite Wednesday’s advice, Eugene’s attempts to connect with Enid end in disappointment when his feelings aren’t reciprocated. Eugene openly expresses his emotions, and his relationship with Wednesday resembles a sibling bond, while Enid remains an extended acquaintance. Nevertheless, Eugene is now recognized among the group of heroes who saved Nevermore and deserves recognition for his contributions, especially in the realm of romance where he finds no partner.

As anticipation grows for the second season of Wednesday, fans hope for Eugene to receive an inspiring romantic storyline, providing the sweetness the series currently lacks. There are numerous character romances, yet Eugene’s tale remains unfulfilled. What do you think?

Don’t miss the highly awaited second season of Wednesday, coming to Netflix in 2025.
