On March 12, 2025, the official website and X (formerly Twitter) account for Watari’s XX Is on the Brink of Collapse announced the series will debut in July 2025. While an exact release date is pending, new details about the cast and production team have been disclosed.
This anime adaptation is based on the popular Japanese manga created by Naru Narumi. Initially serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s Young Ace magazine from August 2014 to January 2015, it continued in Kodansha’s Monthly Young Magazine from November 2015 until September 2023. Throughout its publication, the series produced a total of 16 tankobon volumes, with the anime adaptation officially announced in 2023.

The artwork portrays Murasaki, Naoto, and Satsuki, with Naoto visibly trembling. Narumi encourages fans to look forward to the adaptation, promising it will offer “exceptional visuals, music, and voices.”
The main voice cast includes Shuichiro Umeda as Naoto Watari and Yumika Yano as Satsuki Tachibana, with Yurie Agoma voicing Ishihara Murasaki.

The rom-com anime is directed by Takashi Naoya at Staple Entertainment, with Matsuo Asami serving as the assistant director. The series composition is handled by Tatsuya Takahashi, while Takashi Naoya and Tetsuya Yamada are responsible for scriptwriting. Character design falls to Shoko Yasuda, who also serves as the chief animation director alongside Taeko Ogi, Sachiyo Komito, and Toshimitsu Kobayashi. Costume design is provided by Suzuki Nono.
Following the storyline from Narumi’s manga, the anime centers around Naoto Watari, a high school sophomore who resides with his younger sister, Suzushiro, at their aunt’s house. His singular devotion to “Suzu”leads him to forgo dating, part-time work, and social activities.
However, his world shifts dramatically when his childhood friend, Satsuki Tachibana, transfers to his school, leading to a riveting exploration of their complex relationship.
