Viola Davis Takes Center Stage in Amazon’s G20
Viola Davis returns to the big screen in Amazon’s thrilling action film, G20, where she portrays U.S. President Danielle Sutton. In this high-stakes narrative, Sutton finds herself in a race against time to safeguard her family and global leaders amidst a terror attack during a G20 summit.
From Concept to Creation
During the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Thursday, Davis reflected on the lengthy journey of bringing the project to fruition, having collaborated as a producer since 2016. “It was a long ride,”she shared with enthusiasm.
A Unique Role for a Versatile Actress
Standing beside her husband and producer partner, Julius Tennon, Davis expressed pride in tackling such a distinctive project. “It was just different for us—it seemed like a very commercial, fun movie. It was out of the box; something that people wouldn’t normally see me in, but I was very capable of. Seeing it come to life makes you proud of our capabilities and our vision,” Davis remarked to The Hollywood Reporter.
Action and Authenticity: Training for the Role
Though G20 is packed with action, Davis disclosed that her preparation differed significantly from her intense regime for 2022’s The Woman King, where she trained rigorously for five hours a day over three months. “This was more fisticuffs; this was more about street fighting and guns. This appealed to 6-year-old Viola—she would have squealed with excitement,” Davis explained. She also highlighted the creative aspects of choreographing fight scenes on set, utilizing everyday objects, which added a unique twist to the action sequences.
Teamwork and Dedication
Anthony Anderson, who plays Davis’ on-screen husband, expressed admiration for her dedication. He remarked, “Watching her train in jiujitsu, karate, and boxing was inspiring. Just the heart, determination, and passion she brought to this role was contagious for the entire cast.”
A Timely Narrative
Amidst the current political landscape, Anderson acknowledged the significance of featuring a Black woman president in a leading role. “We made an apolitical movie, but we have Viola leading the free world as an African American woman while also managing her family,” he stated. Producer Andrew Lazar added that the story centers around the inspiring women from both sides of the aisle who have served their country, reinforcing a theme of unity amidst adversity. “This is a story about a mama bear who protects her family, ultimately saving the world. It emphasizes family and togetherness while avoiding divisive narratives,” he concluded.
