Understanding the Technoblade Tribute in A Minecraft Movie: Director Reveals the Special nod to the Beloved YouTuber

Fans of A Minecraft Movie have astutely noted the presence of a pig adorned with a golden crown—a special homage to the renowned YouTuber Technoblade, known for his distinctive avatar. Tragically, Technoblade, whose real name was Dave, passed away at the young age of 23 in 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Within the film, the beloved character Steve, voiced by Jack Black, encounters this crowned pig, leading one character to inquire whether the animal is indeed a king. Steve affectionately remarks that the pig is a “legend,” a heartfelt tribute to the late content creator.

Director Jared Hess collaborated closely with his design team to ensure this tribute was seamlessly woven into the film’s narrative. The inclusion of Technoblade’s tribute was first hinted at by fellow YouTuber Thomas “TommyInnit,” who posed the question to producer Torfi Frans Olafsson about whether there would be a reference to the iconic player. The producer confirmed:

“Yes. That felt like the right thing to do, and you gonna have to see it too.”

Tribute to Technoblade: Inspired by Sebastian Hansen

In a revealing interview with Collider, Jared Hess shared that actor Sebastian Hansen was instrumental in suggesting the tribute during the film’s production. He stated:

“One of my favorite Easter eggs came from Sebastian, who plays Henry. When we were prepping the film, he was like, ‘Look, there’s this amazing Minecraft player named Technoblade who passed away, and I would love to be able to honor him somehow in the film.’ We were like, ‘Oh my goodness, of course.’ So we spoke with our design team, and there’s a really, really sweet, special nod to Technoblade in the film that is really cool.”

This touching easter egg marks the second tribute Technoblade has received recently. In December 2024, the Minecraft Championship honored his legacy by featuring him as a playable card in the official trading card game (TCG).

Technoblade remains a significant figure in the Minecraft community, celebrated for his exceptional player-versus-player (PvP) skills. He claimed victories in two Minecraft Championships (MCCs) and consistently placed within the top nine in every official event, underscoring his prowess and popularity.

In addition to Technoblade’s homage, A Minecraft Movie features a host of other popular content creators, including Aphmau, Mumbo Jumbo, LDShadowLady, and DanTDM. Notably, Minecraft’s lead designer, Jens Bergensten, also makes a cameo appearance as a waiter.

On another note, A Minecraft Movie has shattered records, achieving the highest opening day revenue for a video game adaptation. On its first day alone, it garnered over $57 million and is projected to reach approximately $150 million over the opening weekend.
