Understanding SADI-S: Remi Bader Discusses Her Surgical Experience with Khloe Kardashian and Calls Recovery the “Worst Thing” She’s Ever Endured

In a revealing interview on the Khloé in Wonder Land podcast, influencer Remi Bader shared that she underwent weight loss surgery which involved the removal of 80% of her stomach. During the episode aired on March 27, she discussed the specifics of the procedure, stating:

“So it’s called SADI.”

This advanced weight loss method, known as SADI-S (Single Anastomosis Duodeno–Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy), has enabled Bader to achieve a remarkable weight loss of over 100 pounds in under a year, although she described her recovery as a “brutal”experience.

Bader explained that, while her doctor considered the recovery time to be brief, her personal experience was quite the opposite. She remarked:

“I couldn’t leave the hospital. I couldn’t swallow water. I was like, projectile vomiting… It went on for six weeks.”

Following her revelation, a report by The Mail on the same day addressed ongoing speculation regarding Bader’s surgical choices and use of weight-loss medications.

The SADI-S Procedure: An Overview

SADI-S is a modern bariatric surgical technique designed for addressing obesity and associated metabolic conditions. This method merges elements of gastric bypass with vertical sleeve gastrectomy, facilitating easier execution with a single surgical bowel connection, making it a viable first-step option for those struggling with severe obesity.

Addressing Health Risks Related to Obesity

The SADI-S procedure aids individuals in shedding excess weight while significantly lowering their risk for serious health concerns such as:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol levels
  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Sleep apnea
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Certain cancers including breast, endometrial, and prostate

This surgical technique has been shown to effectively support long-term weight management and even assist in the remission of type 2 diabetes, often presenting a quicker and simpler alternative to gastric bypass.

Potential Drawbacks of SADI-S Surgery

However, patients should be mindful of potential drawbacks. Notably, absorption of essential vitamins and minerals may not be as efficient compared to other bariatric procedures like gastric sleeve or banding. Additionally, the surgery may lead to more frequent bowel movements and could exacerbate or induce reflux disorders.

Remi Bader’s Personal Health Journey

During her discussion with Khloé Kardashian, Bader revealed that her decision to pursue surgery stemmed from severe knee issues and an increase in weight between 80 to 100 pounds in 2023. She recounted a period of intense discomfort, where she was confined to bed due to back pain. Despite attempting weight loss through medications like Ozempic and Manjaro, she found no successful outcomes.

Reflecting on her earlier attempts, she noted:

“I tried Ozempic before it was even a thing… I lost probably, like 10 pounds, but I was really sick and threw up a lot from it.”

Coping with Post-Surgery Life

After considering various weight loss options, her doctor recommended the SADI-S approach, given her struggles with binge eating. In a separate interview with Self magazine, Bader disclosed her ongoing battle with mental health and eating disorders. She has since attended a Hoffman Centre for rehabilitation, engaged in yoga and Pilates, and collaborates with a therapist specializing in eating disorders.

While Bader has not elaborated extensively on the side effects faced post-surgery, her journey emphasizes the complexities associated with weight loss and the holistic approach required to manage health effectively.
