Understanding Recombination in Path of Exile 2

For newcomers, crafting in Path of Exile 2 can seem intimidating due to its intricate mechanics. While seasoned players of the original Path of Exile might leverage their previous experience, beginners often find themselves puzzled by these advanced techniques.

One of the most notable crafting systems introduced in PoE 2 is Recombination, which enables players to merge desirable modifiers from two different items into a singular one. Below, we delve into how this mechanic functions.

Recombination is categorized under the Expedition crafting mechanics in PoE 2, allowing players to creatively mix and match stats from two different items, resulting in a new item that retains some characteristics of both. It is crucial to note that only Magic and Rare items of the same type can undergo this process; Unique items cannot be recombined.

When combining items of different base types, such as an Expert Quarterstaff and an Advanced Quarterstaff, the resulting item will randomly adopt one of the base types, which will influence its Implicit modifiers.

To perform a recombination, players will need to utilize Artifacts collected through Expedition maps as their currency, with each attempt costing between 10 to 25 Artifacts depending on the item’s rarity and power.

The recombination process in PoE 2 takes place at a Recombinator. Here’s how players can effectively utilize this feature:

  1. Place both items you wish to combine into the Recombinator.
  2. Select the desired modifiers from each item via the context menu, ensuring you choose at least one modifier from each. The cost for recombination and the success percentage will be displayed at the bottom.
  3. Once you are satisfied with your selections, click Recombine.

It’s important to note that whether the recombination is successful or not, both original items will be destroyed in the process. The success rate hinges on the rarity and number of selected modifiers—choosing rarer modifiers or more than one typically reduces the success likelihood.

Keep in mind that attempting to recombine items of different types is not possible. For instance, you cannot merge a Bow with a Quarterstaff, despite potential overlaps in modifiers. However, combining an Emerald Ring with an Unset Ring is permissible as both fall under the same item type.

Is Recombination Worth It in PoE 2?

Absolutely, but exercise caution and moderation. Each attempt consumes a significant amount of Artifacts, which can accumulate substantial costs if players indiscriminately combine every item found. If you’re not primarily engaging in Expedition content at the endgame, consider purchasing Artifacts only when you possess two exceptionally valuable items for recombination instead of overusing Chaos Orbs.

While recombination can lead to acquiring some remarkable items, combining high-value Rare items is typically inadvisable. A more pragmatic approach is to recombine a Magic Item that possesses the desired modifier with a Rare item that is merely lacking in that specific area. This method has a comparatively higher success rate and limits the loss, as you’ll only sacrifice one asset should the recombination fail.
