Uncensored and Uncut: New Mainstream Anime Title Ignites Unexpected Controversy

Please Put Them On, Takamine-san has ignited a heated debate within the anime community since its recent premiere on Crunchyroll. This particular series is garnering attention not solely for being an ecchi production aired on a major streaming platform but also for its uncensored content. Many believe that uncensored scenes, while labeled for mature audiences aged 18 and over, raise significant questions about appropriateness.

At the center of the controversy is the male protagonist, Shirota, who finds himself in numerous compromising situations involving Takamine, the female lead. These scenarios often depict him in ways that challenge boundaries of comfort, as he is urged to engage in physical interactions that many audience members might find uncomfortable, especially if viewed around family.

Exploration of Ecchi Scenarios in Mature Anime

Interestingly, the series kicks off with an opening scene that appears typical for an ecchi anime, wherein Shirota is seen caressing Takamine, yet it does not present any overt eroticism at first. However, this initial scene quickly gives way to more explicit moments that defy expectations.

Contrasting the misleading beginning, several scenes feature Takamine displayed topless without censorship, and she engages in provocative acts that enhance the sexual tension of these moments. Notably, there is a scene where Takamine stumbles upon Shirota in a shed and begins to undress, illustrating a stark contrast to the common practice in anime where nudity is often implied rather than explicitly shown.

The series escalates to its most notable scene when Takamine forcibly places Shirota’s hands on her chest while she is visibly soaked. Although she retains a top, the wet fabric leaves little to the imagination, accentuating the series’ shift from modesty to overt eroticism, particularly compared to the more reserved opening.

The Controversial Element of Blackmail

Comparison to Chainsaw Man’s Themes

Crunchyroll has previously presented adult content, such as the controversial Domestic Girlfriend and more recently, Tales of Wedding Rings. However, in Please Put Them On, Takamine-san, the issue extends beyond mere explicitness. The true controversial aspect lies in Takamine’s role in blackmailing Shirota into compliance regarding sexual encounters. The progression of their relationship raises significant ethical concerns, especially when contrasted with moments in Chainsaw Man, where Denji’s dynamic with Makima avoided similar scrutiny.

In this anime, Takamine leverages her position to coerce Shirota into participating in sexual activities, reinforcing themes of manipulation. She even resorts to framing him, ultimately reducing his agency, a narrative choice that many find problematic.

It’s worth noting that the source material, a manga by Yuichi Hiiragi, is surprisingly less explicit than its animated counterpart. A look at the Manga Up! app reveals that the visual content in the original narrative was more subdued. Thus, it seems that Liden Films, the studio behind the series, chose to amplify the explicitness of Please Put Them On, Takamine-san, with Crunchyroll endorsing this decision.
