The Lincoln Lawyer star Yaya DaCosta has opened up about her absence in the upcoming fourth season. Netflix’s popular legal drama was recently confirmed for a new season, which was to be expected given its exquisite following. However, fans were taken aback by the news that DaCosta would not reprise her character, prosecutor Andrea Freeman. This decision is attributed to the fact that Andrea does not exist in The Law of Innocence, the Michael Connelly novel that serves as the basis for the fourth season’s storyline.
As DaCosta gears up for her role in the Lifetime film Not My Family: The Monique Smith Story, which premieres on April 12 at 8 PM ET, she spoke with TV Insider about the unexpected decision regarding her character. In her remarks, DaCosta mentioned that Andrea’s absence from the show was neither foreseen nor explained to her. Nevertheless, she remains optimistic and is concentrating on her future endeavors while leaving the possibility of a return as Andrea open:
“It was not expected. It was not explained. Sometimes when things like this happen, the writers will give an explanation in a conversation between two characters who are on the show. Or someone will make a phone call and pretend the disappeared character is on the other end. Who knows what they’ll do? I’m just focusing on the now and future. My satisfaction is irrelevant. I have faith in the ultimate divine plan for my career and for my life.”

Potential for Greater Character Development

Initially introduced as an opponent to Mickey Haller, portrayed by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Andrea’s character evolved significantly throughout the series. The storyline in season three hinted at a burgeoning respect that could lead to romance, although the series ultimately stopped short of exploring this dynamic fully. In what currently stands as her final scene, Andrea portrayed strength by advocating for herself at work and departing with a hopeful smile, a gesture that hints at an intriguing character arc.
According to Ted Humphrey, co-showrunner and executive producer, there may be opportunities to reintroduce Andrea in future seasons. Although the focus of season 4 will shift to Mickey’s fight for his innocence, it’s worth noting that Maggie, played by Neve Campbell, will have an enhanced presence in the storyline moving forward.

Embracing Creative Freedom in Adaptations

The fluctuations in casting within The Lincoln Lawyer have often been attributed to the desire to stay true to the original source material. While this provides a framework for character appearances, it can also restrict creative expansion. In instances where talent and actor chemistry exist, straying from the novel can yield enriching content for the audience.
As filming for season 4 progresses, there is speculation that Andrea’s character might still receive a mention, an element that would maintain her relevance in the narrative. This would not only be a welcome sign for fans but might also suggest that Mickey’s acquaintances may emerge again when circumstances allow.
