The iconic rhythm games of the PSP era, particularly the first two installments of Patapon, are making their exciting debut on the Nintendo Switch this year. This exciting release marks the fourth PlayStation-owned intellectual property to be confirmed for a Switch launch.
Patapon was first introduced to audiences in 2007 and was developed collaboratively by Pyramid and the now-defunct Japan Studio, a PlayStation first-party team. Its groundbreaking mechanics, where players command a troop of adorable, one-eyed warriors through rhythm, captured the hearts of many PSP gamers. Following its success, a sequel was launched in 2008, followed by a third entry in 2011. The original titles saw a resurgence when they were re-released on PS4 by 2020, cementing their status as cult classics in the PlayStation universe.
This year has been pivotal for fans of the franchise, especially with the addition of Patapon 3 to the PlayStation Plus Premium classics catalog. Now, the original two games are gearing up for their much-anticipated arrival on the Switch, as announced in the latest Nintendo Direct. Interestingly, this collection is developed not by PlayStation but under the direction of Bandai Namco Entertainment. Patapon 1+2 Replay is set to launch on July 17, 2025, delivering the beloved game experience that fans adore.

Pre-order options for this title are anticipated to launch soon, but pricing information is yet to be revealed. While some may find the omission of Patapon 3 surprising, it is possible that Sony is observing player reactions to determine demand for the third installment’s potential standalone release.
In addition to Patapon, the March 2025 Nintendo Direct showcased other legacy PlayStation franchises. Everybody’s Golf: Hot Shots, an exciting new entry developed by Bandai Namco, is set to release on Switch, PS5, and PC later this year. Furthermore, Bandai Namco also unveiled a remaster of the lesser-known PS Vita title Freedom Wars in January 2025. As Sony continues to broaden its reach into the Nintendo gaming community—marked by releases like LEGO Horizon Adventures on Switch last November—the intrigue surrounding how far these collaborations will go only heightens.
