Twitch CEO Dan Clancy Explains the Process for Reinstating Permanently Banned Streamers’ Channels

Twitch CEO Discusses Reinstatement Process for Permanently Banned Streamers

Dan Clancy, CEO of Twitch, recently addressed questions regarding the reinstatement of permanently banned streamer accounts during the 34th episode of the official twitch patch_notes livestream. The head of community, Mary Kish, shared a particularly provocative inquiry from a community member concerning the prospect of a “mass unban”of affected content creators.

“‘With the policy change, should we expect a mass unbanning of permanently banned streamers?’ It’s a spicy question.”

Clancy responded thoughtfully, shedding light on Twitch’s existing policies pertaining to channel reinstatement:

“We had a policy around applying for reinstatement for some time now. And we’ve worked, especially over the last year, to make that very clear. So, indefinitely suspended streamers could then apply for reinstatement. It’s usually six months after the suspension, depending on the severity.”

In addition, he elaborated on Twitch’s newly implemented strike expiration policy, which is aimed at facilitating the reinstatement of indefinitely banned channels. Clancy stated:

“This person is probably referring to the change we just announced a few weeks ago about strike expiration. For those streamers that would not have been suspended for the last six months, had it not been for the new strike expiration policy, we did go ahead and unban them. If this affects you, please apply for reinstatement. It is indefinite; it is not permanent. We have a process in place for streamers to return and engage with the community.”

Understanding Twitch’s Strike Expiration Policy

On February 19, 2025, Twitch announced significant updates to its enforcement system, aiming to enhance transparency regarding moderator actions and streamer violations. Under the revised policy, violations will now have an expiration period, allowing them to drop off the account after a designated timeframe.

According to a post from Twitch on X, they have stated:

“Violations now expire: Most violations will expire and drop off of your account after a set amount of time. Higher severity violations will take longer to expire, and violations of our highest harm policies won’t drop off of an account. Escalating consequences: In order to hold community members accountable for repeated harmful behavior, we’re introducing escalating consequences for repeated violations of the same policy.”

This announcement has garnered considerable attention, especially from fans who are hoping for the reinstatement of popular streamer Adin Ross, who has been indefinitely suspended for two years.
