Liz Garbus Connects ‘Lost Girls’ to Suspect Arrested in ‘Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer’ Trailer

New Netflix Series: “Gone Girls”Explores Long Island Serial Killer Case

Director Liz Garbus, renowned for her work in Lost Girls, is set to delve deep into the failures of the criminal justice system with her upcoming documentary series titled Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer. Scheduled for release on Netflix on March 31, the series brings renewed attention to the infamous, yet unresolved, Long Island serial murders.

Gone Girls revisits the frayed investigation that has haunted the families of many women involved in the sex industry who were affected by a tragic series of disappearances. Garbus once again captures the struggles and frustrations of these families as they strive for justice against a backdrop of police negligence.

“There were red flags, one after the other, as to what was not looked into by the police,” states one commentator in the series’ trailer.

Significantly, in 2023, after 13 long years of investigation, the Suffolk County Police made a breakthrough by arresting Rex Heuermann, a suspect in what has come to be known as the Gilgo Beach serial killer case. This development marks a pivotal moment in a series of events that previously left many unanswered questions.

The new series serves as a follow-up to Lost Girls, which focused on the harrowing search for a serial rapist. In Gone Girls, Garbus recounts the complexities of a poorly managed investigation that has finally seen progress with Heuermann’s arrest. He faces charges in connection with the deaths of seven women and, as new evidence comes to light, additional charges may follow.

In a recent Q&A session with Netflix, Garbus shared insights into her experience with the Long Island serial killer investigation, explaining, “Lost Girls really told that story. We revisit the same case in Gone Girls. Why? Because thanks to a new regime in Suffolk County, we now have the answers the families were looking for over a decade. We got to explore what was going on in the police department and uncover a corruption scandal that made it clear why so little was being done for these women. I think it’s a really powerful companion piece to the scripted film.”

Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer is a production of Story Syndicate, with executive producers Dan Cogan, Anne Carey, Jon Bardin, Mala Chapple, Elizabeth Wolfe, and Kate Barry. Joshua Levine is also on board as a producer, further adding to the project’s credibility.

As anticipation builds for this gripping documentary series, many are hopeful that it will shed new light on the injustices faced by victims and their families throughout this tragic saga.
