Top 7 Highlights from My Visit to Universal Epic Universe

Universal Epic Universe is set to debut at Universal Orlando Resort in May, promising an exhilarating new experience for Florida visitors. In anticipation of the grand opening, the resort has been conducting preview events, including a media tour I had the privilege of attending on behalf of Screen Rant. Alongside team members and their families, I explored the park’s five immersive worlds, took a close look at the forthcoming attractions, and enjoyed an exclusive preview of a stunning new hotel.

Once it opens, Epic Universe will be the fifth addition to Universal Orlando Resort, joining Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Volcano Bay, and CityWalk. Each park offers distinctive adventures, but Epic Universe has captured significant attention with its innovative experiences, spectacular landscapes, and diverse dining options.

Before the media event, we were granted a specialized behind-the-scenes tour of the remarkable Loews Helios Grand Hotel within Epic Universe. The hotel stunned with its expansive lobby, Mediterranean dining, a zero-entry pool, and top-tier amenities. However, the highlight for me was undoubtedly Bar Helios, perched at the top of the hotel and offering breathtaking views of the entire park.

Reservations for Helios Grand Hotel are already open, with the official opening slated for April 16, 2025. The hotel features a private entrance to Epic Universe and a domed rooftop bar that provides a panoramic view of the park. Its constellation-themed ceiling was truly mesmerizing, making it an ideal spot to unwind while soaking in the night-time park lights.

Within Epic Universe’s five distinct realms, guests can enjoy numerous meet-and-greet opportunities. While Universal Monsters await in Dark Universe and iconic characters roam The Wizarding World of Harry Potter’s Ministry of Magic, I was lucky enough to meet two of the most beloved characters: Hiccup and Toothless.

Located in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, popular characters like Astrid, along with twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut, wandered around for brief interactions. The addition of Haddock Paddock offers secluded meet-and-greet sessions, where I met Hiccup and Toothless, who responded to commands, creating immersive moments captured in unforgettable photos and videos.

After exploring Isle of Berk, I ventured to the star attraction of Epic Universe: Stardust Racers. Situated in Celestial Park, this dazzling dual-track coaster captured my attention immediately. Designed to resemble racing comets, the tracks intertwined and offered riders a unique experience on each side.

With impressive specifications of reaching 62 mph and soaring to heights of 133 feet, Stardust Racers is genuinely one of the most thrilling roller coasters I have encountered. The intensity of the ride exceeded my expectations, making it easy to understand why riders would want to experience it repeatedly.

An Unexpected Ride Malfunction Created a Lasting Memory

Not every major attraction in Universal Orlando is a roller coaster, and Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry exemplifies this with its motion-simulation experience enveloped within an indoor setting. This attraction marked the Epic Universe media preview’s initial day of operation, and despite encountering some technical difficulties, it delivered a captivating experience.

Boasting an awe-inspiring queue featuring the Metro-Floo and elaborate Ministry departments, the ride evolved through imaginative storytelling complemented by cutting-edge digital effects. While the attraction’s initial breakdown was an inconvenience, it transformed into a cherished memory, especially since the ride functioned flawlessly during my second attempt.

Mastering Wand Use with Wizards & a Witch

Interactive Wands Enrich the Park Experience

The interactive wand experience in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic captivated guests as they explored the specially designed areas called Place Cachée. Wand holders could activate magical elements in the environment, from enchanted storefronts to the summoning of Fantastic Beasts, including hidden Nifflers.

During the media event, we were provided with interactive wands to test. While attempting to master a spell at a storefront, we were assisted by three students from various wizarding schools, who showcased their own wand techniques. This interaction enriched our visit, enhancing the park’s immersive atmosphere as in-universe characters guided us through the magical realm.

Immersing in a Horror-Themed Park

Dark Universe Offers a Unique Experience

As a dedicated horror enthusiast, being in a park inspired by classic horror legends was a surreal experience. Experiencing Dark Universe was especially exciting; stepping through the gates of Epic Universe transported me to Darkmoor Village, home to Universal’s iconic horror figures.

The intricate details and atmosphere throughout the village, including somber architecture like the ominous burning windmill above the Burning Blade Tavern, enriched my adventure. Unfortunately, time constraints limited my experience on Dark Universe’s rides, but the impressive design and merchandise ensured I would return for more.

Entering Super Nintendo World Through the Iconic Green Portal

The Super Mario-Themed World Features an Impressive Portal

Green Pipe to Super Nintendo World

Last but not least was my visit to Super Nintendo World, which featured, in my opinion, the coolest entry point of all. The portal, designed to mirror the franchise’s iconic green pipe, transported guests through a glowing tunnel to Princess Peach’s Castle, eventually leading into Mushroom Kingdom.

Each realm at Universal Epic Universe offers a unique immersive experience, and Super Nintendo World, based on a beloved video game franchise, was particularly vibrant. With a Power-Up band in hand, I was able to engage with various interactive elements in Super Mario Land and Donkey Kong Country, including hitting punchable blocks and encountering familiar characters, all while surrounded by enchanting sights from the game.
