  • Despite the absence of Man-Thing, the film is expected to deliver an entertaining and comedic experience.

Thunderbolts is set for its theatrical release next week, generating considerable buzz among fans. Recently, its director uncovered an intriguing detail that could have altered the film’s dynamic significantly.

As the second Marvel Studios film released this year, following Anthony Mackie’s Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts brings together an unlikely group of characters—including both anti-heroes and villains—who unite to seek redemption. Key figures include Yelena Belova (portrayed by Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Ava Starr/Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), and Robert Reynolds/Sentry (Lewis Pullman), among others. However, many were surprised to learn that one other character almost made the cut.

In a recent interview with SFX Magazine (as reported by GamesRadar), director Jake Schreier revealed, “I think there was a point during pitching when I really wanted Man-Thing to be on the team.”Despite his efforts, Marvel ultimately rejected this proposal, but Schreier reflected positively on this decision, stating that “it all worked for the best.”Man-Thing, also known as Dr. Theodore “Ted”Sallis, is a complex character with origins tied to the experimental Super-Soldier Serum, which produced Captain America. After a series of unfortunate events, he becomes a creature infused with swamp mysticism and his ability to sense human emotions creates a unique dynamic.

Schreier emphasized that the selection of characters for the Thunderbolts was based on deeper narratives rather than simply including “bad guys.” The goal was to explore characters situated in morally ambiguous spaces, ones that were “potentially destined for something more”but faced tragic missteps. He described the ensemble as “misunderstood”figures, such as John Walker, a character whose aspirations of heroism descended into cautionary tales due to his failure to embody the ideals represented by Captain America.

“Maybe there is something that is worth caring about. I think all of them have kind of lost touch with that idea,” Schreier articulated, highlighting the emotional complexity present among the cast.

As one of the highly anticipated additions to the MCU this year, Thunderbolts promises to be an exhilarating, comedic adventure steeped in character-driven storytelling. The distinctiveness of assembling a team of misfits allows for entertaining interactions characterized by conflict and camaraderie, showcasing the diverse personalities at play. While the notion of including Man-Thing might have seemed unusual, the rapidly evolving landscape of the MCU suggests anything is possible as narratives expand. Man-Thing’s capacity to sense emotions and unleash fiery defenses against fear could have made him a critical asset against adversaries.

Moreover, Man-Thing’s mystical ties to the Nexus of All Realities lend further intrigue to his potential role, opening doors to multiverse adventures. His character could have resonated deeply with fellow team members, like Yelena and Bucky, who themselves are navigating complex emotional layers. Introducing him would have imbued Thunderbolts with supernatural elements, enhancing the team’s ability to tackle mystical challenges. Nonetheless, initial screenings of the film have yielded favorable reactions, particularly for audiences seeking fresh narratives in the superhero genre.

Thunderbolts is scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 2, 2025.
