Thor Unveils Surprising New Superpower That Defies Expectations

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Ultimates #11! As one of Marvel Universe’s mightiest heroes, Thor wields an array of formidable superpowers, all stemming from his divine lineage. As a God of Asgard, Thor is destined to succeed his father, Odin, as the Allfather and ruler of Asgard. While he has already ascended to that status in Earth-616, he is still on his quest to earn the title in the Ultimate Universe. To achieve this, however, he must embrace an unexpected superpower.

In The Ultimates #11 by Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri, Thor teams up with Sif on a mission to free Asgard from Loki’s tyrannical reign. Having aided Loki in assuming kingship, the Maker manipulates Earth-6160 and seeks to reshape it according to his desires. As Thor and Sif race against time to dethrone Loki before the Maker is liberated from his temporal prison, the stakes are higher than ever.

The question arises: how can Thor and Sif confront an entire kingdom alone? With Loki as the Allfather, the inhabitants of Asgard are bound to obey his commands. Sif, who previously served under Loki and ensured Thor’s imprisonment, has her own complicated history with him. However, with a new and innovative ability—an invisibility cloak—Thor and Sif devise a plan to infiltrate Asgard and gather support against their king.

A God of Thunder Doesn’t Sneak: Thor’s Uncharacteristic Tactic

Seeing Thor embrace the power of invisibility is surprising for long-time fans who recognize him as a figure of strength and visibility. Typically, Thor enters battle with a thunderous roar, announcing his presence with striking lightning and leaving no doubt about his identity or purpose. The notion of Thor concealing himself as a mere invisible spy clashes with everything his character embodies.

However, Thor’s current predicament compels him to change his tactics. A reckless assault on Asgard would likely lead to immediate death or imprisonment. Although Thor prefers combat over stealth, in this context, remaining hidden is the most prudent course of action, demonstrating his adaptability even in challenging circumstances.

The Potential for Invisibility in the MCU

Crafted by the Dwarves of Nidavellir: The Origins of the Invisibility Cloak

While it may not be on his radar, the MCU version of Thor could very well obtain a similar invisibility cloak. In the Ultimate Universe, this cloak was forged by the skilled Dwarves of Nidavellir. Fans will recall visiting Nidavellir in Avengers: Infinity War where they met Eitri. With the defeat of Thanos, it’s likely that Eitri would be eager to assist Thor in any way he can, potentially crafting new gear, including an invisibility cloak.

Given its capability to conceal even from the gods, this invisibility cloak would be a significant asset for Thor in the MCU, much as it is in the Ultimate Universe. Nonetheless, the idea of Thor employing such stealthy tactics challenges the conventional expectations of his character.
