Inspired by a Classic: The Narrative Behind Scandals

Scandals draws inspiration from the 2003 film Untold Scandal, which itself is adapted from the French literary classic Les Liaisons dangereuses. For those unfamiliar, this French novel boasts a robust legacy in cinema and literature.

Adapted for the screen by director Stephen Frears in 1988, Les Liaisons dangereuses received critical acclaim, including a nomination for Best Picture at the Oscars. Now, Scandals seeks to offer a novel interpretation through Netflix, combining historical drama with captivating psychological elements.

“Scandals (WT) brings to life a world where love and temptation were taboo. Set in a time when harboring desires was forbidden, the series depicts characters who challenge the strict order of society and engage in a risqué game of love and temptation,” the official summary of Scandals reads.

Character Insights

Son Ye-jin is set to portray Lady Cho, a “strategist”renowned for her charm and her unconventional involvement in a secret love wager. Ji Chang-wook will take on the role of Cho Won, the epitome of a “playboy in Joseon,”who initially shuns love but soon finds himself ensnared in Lady Cho’s intricate web of seduction.

Nana rounds out the trio as Hui Yeon, a young widow who has led a life of purity but unexpectedly becomes intrigued by the handsome Cho Won.

Behind the Scenes

This eagerly awaited series will be directed by Jung Ji-woo, known for Tune in for Love and Netflix’s Somebody. The screenplay is a collaborative effort of writers Lee Seung-young (famous for The Art of Negotiation) and Ahn Hye-song (also from Somebody). The production team, Movie Rock, is known for their previous works including Innocent Witness and Tune in for Love.

Although an official release date for Scandals has yet to be confirmed, the series is expected to premiere later this year, given its current production status.
