‘The Wedding Banquet’ Trailer Features Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, and Kelly Marie Tran in a Romantic Comedy Reimagining

Exciting Trailer Unveiled for Andrew Ahn’s *The Wedding Banquet*

Bleecker Street and ShivHans Pictures have officially launched the trailer for *The Wedding Banquet*, a fresh romantic comedy directed by Andrew Ahn, on Monday morning. This film not only serves as a reinterpretation of Ang Lee’s acclaimed 1993 movie but also brings a contemporary twist to its narrative.

The film features a talented cast, including Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Chan, and Han Gi-Chan, and is set against the vibrant backdrop of Seattle. The storyline revolves around two couples grappling with major life decisions. Lee (played by Gladstone) and her partner Angela (Tran) are eager to begin their family but face financial hurdles in affording IVF treatments. Meanwhile, Chris (Yang) and Min (Han) must navigate the complexities of an impending visa expiration and Min’s fear of disclosing his sexual orientation to his traditional grandmother, who would disown him if she found out.

In a twist of fate, Min suggests a practical solution: he proposes a marriage of convenience to Angela, intending to help her gain funding for IVF in return for securing his visa status and averting familial fallout. The film recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and also includes performances by Joan Chen as May, Angela’s mother, and Youn Yuh-Jung as Min’s grandmother, adding depth to the ensemble.

As depicted in the trailer, May struggles with the idea of her daughter marrying a man—even if it is solely to support a gay couple. Angela is seen urging her mother to remove any trace of her LGBTQIA+ support from social media, leading to a humorous exchange where May queries, “Can I still post Instagram stories?” to which Angela retorts, “Do you want grandchildren?” This exchange highlights the cultural and generational tensions that will be explored in the film.

The stakes heighten when Min’s grandmother unexpectedly visits, prompting a series of comedic attempts to conceal the truth about Min and Angela’s arrangement. Min humorously expresses his disdain for American customs, exclaiming, “I don’t even want to be an American. Your trains are so slow, and I never know how much to tip.”

The screenplay, co-written by James Schamus and Ahn, promises a compelling blend of humor and poignant moments. *The Wedding Banquet* is scheduled for theatrical release on April 18, making it a highly anticipated film for audiences eager for stories reflecting modern love and familial complexities.
