- Previously portrayed as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones, Ramsey’s acting background provides reassurance around their character in Season 2.
The Last of Us is gearing up for its highly anticipated second season. Co-showrunner Neil Druckmann has hinted at a captivating mystery that will focus on Bella Ramsey’s character, Ellie.
Ellie is a critical figure in HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, notable for her immunity to the Cordyceps infection, which puts her at the center of a potential cure for the outbreak. In the inaugural season, Ramsey’s powerful portrayal of Ellie showcased her emotional complexity, resilience, and vulnerabilities, receiving considerable acclaim from both viewers and critics. Although Ramsey’s unique interpretation remained faithful to the character’s origins in the video game series, fans express some apprehensions regarding Ramsey’s appearance as Ellie due to the five-year narrative gap between The Last of Us (2013) and The Last of Us Part II (2020).
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Druckmann emphasized Ramsey’s prowess as an actor, pointing out how their experiences and character growth from Season 1 will contribute to the portrayal of a 19-year-old Ellie in Season 2. He stated, “I mean, Bella is such an incredible actor that not only are they older, but they’ve also experienced so much trauma in season one.” This transition over the five-year interval will be pivotal to the plot’s mystery.
“And so much has happened in that five-year gap that that’s part of the mystery of the season — what occurred during those years. When you watch Bella perform, you can see maturity in their eyes,” added Druckmann, highlighting the complexity of conveying such development through performance.
Addressing Fan Concerns About Ramsey’s Age

In the original game, Ellie was 14 years old, while she is 19 in the sequel, creating a natural expectation for visible growth and maturity. Although Ramsey was 19 at the time of portraying the younger Ellie, some fans have noted that their youthful appearance remains largely unchanged. Despite these concerns, Druckmann has maintained that the essence of the character’s journey is far more critical than physical likeness.
Ramsey openly expressed feelings of anxiety regarding fan expectations, stating, “It’s a little bit scary,”while acknowledging the immense popularity of the first season. Nevertheless, they also expressed excitement about returning to the role. Druckmann underscored that the creative direction of the show was set regardless of fan response, reinforcing the commitment to honoring the storytelling that resonated so well with audiences.
Further supporting their qualifications, Ramsey has a rich portfolio of work, including a well-received performance as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones. Concerns about their appearance in Season 2 are understandable, considering the changes Ellie undergoes in The Last of Us Part II. This transformation is not only physical but also encompasses her emotional and psychological growth through harrowing experiences. Fans have reason to be hopeful, yet they should confidently await Ramsey’s performance to gauge its alignment with Ellie’s evolution.
The Last of Us Season 2 is set to premiere on HBO on April 13, 2025.
