Video games have undeniably contributed iconic characters to the broader entertainment landscape over the years. Figures like Super Mario, Lara Croft, and Crash Bandicoot have etched their names into pop culture history. However, not every character enjoys universal acclaim. A prime example is Abby, a divisive figure introduced in The Last of Us Part 2. As anticipation builds for the upcoming premiere of the show’s second season, fans are particularly excited to see how Abby will be portrayed on screen.
Recently, Game Rant had the opportunity to attend a press conference featuring the cast and crew of The Last of Us Season 2. This gathering provided insights as team members shared their thoughts on the new season and their experiences during filming. Among them was Kaitlyn Dever, who has been cast as Abby. Dever opened up about her experiences, and writer and producer Craig Mazin praised her dedication and commitment to the role.
Kaitlyn Dever’s Enthusiastic Experience on Set

Kaitlyn Dever’s acting pedigree includes notable TV appearances in Dopesick and Last Man Standing. However, stepping into the role of Abby in The Last of Us marks a departure from her previous work. Embracing a character that has garnered mixed reactions is no small feat, yet Dever quickly recognized the significance of her choice. Reflecting on her initial day on set, she shared:
”I was nervous, I was anxious, but also very excited. I’ve been a huge fan of this game and the show for a very long time. The world of The Last of Us is so big! You can definitely feel that. I felt less nervous once I got onto set though, just because of this wonderful group of people I got to work with. It really felt like I was being cared for and taken care of in a way that I haven’t ever really experienced before. So, it was really a thrill as a person and an actor.”
Insights from Craig Mazin on Dever’s Performance
Craig Mazin, alongside Neil Druckmann, was intrigued to see how Dever would navigate the demanding physicality of her role, especially given her background in primarily comedic and dramatic performances. Their curiosity was rapidly assuaged during filming, as they witnessed her remarkable commitment. Mazin expressed his admiration:
”Kaitlyn did things that I’m not sure she even should have done. I don’t know how she did them. When we meet new performers, we’re sort of curious as to what they can actually do. What are they comfortable with? Kaitlyn would just never say no. It was amazing. When you see how physical, just how physically tremendous her performance is, it’s insane.”
This level of dedication highlights Dever’s intention to fully embody Abby’s character. While she may not match the physicality of her video game predecessor, her portrayal promises to deliver a compelling and dynamic character interpretation. Fans will be eager to see how her narrative unfolds in the series, and whether it aligns closely with the storyline of The Last of Us Part 2, or if new elements will be introduced.
