Rockstar Games has officially postponed the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) to May 2026, leaving fans disheartened. Initially scheduled for Fall 2025, this sequel to the globally famous franchise is highly regarded as one of the most eagerly awaited video games ever, and players will now have to exercise additional patience.
Understanding the Delay: A Commitment to Quality
In a recent discussion with IGN, Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of parent company Take-Two Interactive, provided insights into the reasoning behind this delay. He emphasized the necessity of ensuring that Rockstar Games fully realizes its “creative vision without limitations.”
“As we get closer to completion of a title that’s seeking perfection, the needs or lack thereof, for continued polish become clear. In this case, there was an opportunity with a small amount of incremental time, we thought, to make sure Rockstar Games achieves its creative vision with no limitations. And I supported of course that approach.”
This sentiment was echoed in the official announcement regarding the delay, where the development team expressed that the extra time is crucial to meet the high standards expected by their dedicated fanbase.
A Worthy Investment in Gaming Excellence
During a May 15, 2025 earnings call, Zelnick reiterated that granting Rockstar the necessary time for GTA 6 is a “worthy investment”in the future of the franchise.
“I believe affording Rockstar additional time for such a groundbreaking project is a worthy investment.”
Zelnick also revealed that development on GTA 6 has been progressing in earnest since 2020. He described the complexity of this upcoming title as surpassing any previous projects from the studio, promising significant advancements in gameplay and storytelling.
