The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Showrunners Assure “An Honest, Emotional, and Authentic” Conclusion for June Ahead of Sequel Series

The Handmaid’s Tale is set to wrap up with its sixth and final season, bringing a significant chapter of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian narrative to a close. Showrunners Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang have assured viewers that June (portrayed by Elisabeth Moss) will receive an “authentic”conclusion to her tumultuous journey. This farewell to the series doesn’t mark the end of the saga, however, as Atwood’s sequel, The Testaments, is being adapted into a new Hulu series, which is already progressing with key casting decisions.

In an interview with ScreenRant, the showrunners emphasized their commitment to providing June with a sincere, emotionally resonant ending. They revealed that while numerous story arcs will reach resolution in the concluding season, audiences should prepare for a cliffhanger that transitions seamlessly into the events of The Testaments. Tuchman and Chang expressed confidence in how the series will conclude, valuing the chance to bring the story to an appropriate close. Here’s what they had to say:

Eric Tuchman: I think fans should expect an honest, emotional, and authentic ending for June’s journey. If they’ve stuck with her from the beginning, I think they’ll be very understanding about where she ends up.

Yahlin Chang: We are able to resolve a lot of storylines. There’s still probably a very big cliffhanger that will get resolved in this sequel, but it was just such a blessing to be able to wrap up this amazing series. It was a privilege, really. I’m just thrilled that I got to be a part of it, and I thank our fans who are really, I think, the best fans in the world.

Tuchman and Chang are stepping in as showrunners for the final season, taking over from Bruce Miller, who is currently focused on developing The Testaments.

June’s Conclusion and Its Implications for the Series

A Determined Conclusion to June’s Journey

June standing in silence

June’s character has evolved into a beacon of defiance and hope for her fellow handmaids, especially after her heroic actions in season 3. As of season 5, her narrative arc intensifies as she prepares to return to Gilead, compelled by a desire for vengeance against the oppressive regime. This choice underscores her unwillingness to remain safe in Canada while Gilead continues its reign of terror.

With the insights from Tuchman and Chang, it’s apparent that June’s fate in the finale will resonate deeply with her character’s evolution, suggesting a definitive conclusion to her struggles. Whether this signifies a tragic or triumphant end remains uncertain; however, her conflict with Gilead is poised to reach a pivotal resolution before the narrative expands into The Testaments.

As June continues her relentless fight against Gilead in the upcoming episodes, her ultimate fate remains shrouded in ambiguity. The showrunners’ comments indicate that the finale will offer a meaningful conclusion for her character, though the risks she faces are daunting. Depending on how the season draws to a close and transitions into The Testaments, June’s ending could serve as a pivotal handoff, laying groundwork for the next generation of characters.

The Handmaid’s Tale is set to premiere its sixth season on April 8, 2024, exclusively on Hulu.
