The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6: Co-Showrunner Discusses June’s Choice Between Nick and Luke

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6: June’s Relationship Dilemma

As we approach the final chapter of The Handmaid’s Tale, co-showrunner Yahlin Chang has opened up about the critical romantic choices facing June Osborne, portrayed by Elisabeth Moss. The impending sixth season is set to explore June’s last confrontations with Gilead over ten riveting episodes, leaving fans eager to see her ultimate decision regarding her love interests: Luke, played by O-T Fagbenle, and Nick, portrayed by Max Minghella.

June’s Choice: The Stakes Involved

In a recent conversation with ScreenRant, Chang illuminated the complexities of June’s relationships with both men. He emphasized Luke’s unwavering loyalty, noting that he has been a consistent presence in her life, offering forgiveness and support amidst her trauma. Conversely, Nick has provided June with a sense of purpose during her darkest times in Gilead. Although Chang refrains from detailing who June will ultimately choose, it is evident that her heart can only belong to one.

Luke has been her rock. He has stuck by her, and he has waited for her for years. No matter what she does when she comes out, he sees a woman who’s his wife, who’s been suffering and traumatized. And so he forgives a lot; forgives her ripping Fred apart and forgives her feelings for Nick. He doesn’t like it at all, but he is really so stoic, and his love for her is so consistent and true.

And Nick too, his love for her is a beautiful thing, and it is unyielding. That relationship was really born out of the horrible trauma and the oppression that Gilead had. June really needed to find a reason for living or a purpose in her day-to-day life, and Nick gave her some of that. Both men, in their different ways, have really helped her survive.

But it is a really difficult situation for her to constantly be pulled between them. We find that people are either Nick shippers or Luke shippers, no in between.

Examining the Implications of June’s Choice

Will the Series Deliver a Definitive Romantic Conclusion?

Each character has played a pivotal role in June’s journey throughout The Handmaid’s Tale. Nick’s attempts to safeguard her from Gilead’s clutches are commendable, especially during his ascendancy to Commander. Meanwhile, Luke’s emotional turmoil stemming from a tragic incident—where he accidentally caused the death of a Canadian citizen while defending June—could create further tension as their safe haven in Canada faces increasing scrutiny towards refugees.

Chang’s nuanced insights suggest there might indeed be a planned resolution concerning June’s romantic future, yet it appears that the outcome is not intended to be straightforward. The narrative’s emphasis on the rich history she shares with both men raises the possibility that a decisive choice has already been made in the writers’ minds. This choice could signify a transition for June as she prepares to cede the spotlight to characters from the upcoming spin-off, The Testaments. However, for the time being, fans remain in suspense about the fate of her relationships.

Our Perspective on June’s Final Decision

Will June’s Quest for Justice Surpass Her Romantic Ties?

While the potential for June to end up with either Luke or Nick is intriguing, her current focus remains firmly on resisting Gilead’s oppressive regime and rescuing her daughter, Hannah (played by Jordana Blake). This narrative thread hints that The Handmaid’s Tale could conclude without providing definitive answers to her romantic entanglements, should the writers opt to prioritize her overarching mission of liberation over relational resolutions. As her battle intensifies, choices regarding love may take a backseat to her deeply rooted need for vengeance and justice.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 premieres on Tuesday, April 8, exclusively on Hulu.
