The Exciting Tommy Twist in ‘The Last Of Us’: Reflecting on the Purpose of Season 2’s Major Game Alteration

Warning: This article includes major SPOILERS for Season 2, Episode 5 of The Last of Us, as well as pivotal plot points from The Last of Us Part II. The return of Tommy in The Last of Us has left me intrigued, particularly regarding the significant departures from the acclaimed video game narrative. The conclusion of Season 2, Episode 5 features Jesse re-entering the storyline, alongside Tommy, as they journey from Jackson to Seattle in hopes of rescuing Ellie and Dina. Gabriel Luna’s portrayal of Tommy Miller is one of the standout performances in the series, and his expanded presence was one of the bright prospects I anticipated in the new season, especially with the foreboding events surrounding Joel.

In contrast to the video game, where Tommy embarks on a reckless mission to Seattle alone, prompting Ellie and Dina to follow with revenge on their minds, the TV series presents a different narrative trajectory. This change adds layers of complexity to Tommy’s character, raising questions about his motivations and allegiance. While I’m excited to see Tommy involved in the unfolding drama in Seattle, I find myself questioning the implications of these adjustments.

Tommy’s involvement in the Seattle storyline is pivotal to the progression of The Last of Us Part II.

While I’m pleased to see him actively participating, especially following a rather low-key representation of Seattle in both the original game and Season 1, I’m eager to witness how the show portrays his character. In the game, Tommy causes quite a ruckus as he takes on a formidable paramilitary group, showcasing his capabilities as a one-man army.

However, the television adaptation paints Tommy in a different light. It’s challenging to envision him engaging in the same ruthless behavior as his video game counterpart. If his presence in Seattle is solely to fetch Ellie and Dina, I ponder his deeper intentions. Should he harbor any thoughts of vengeance against Abby, it raises doubts about whether this version of Tommy truly embodies that darker path.

The battle against the Infected in Episode 2 emerges as a significant deviation from the game and likely escalated the production budget. This altercation serves not only to shift Tommy’s dynamics away from Joel but also hints at a new character arc. As Jackson’s leader, beloved by the community and a family man, Tommy belongs in Jackson rather than risking everything in Seattle.

A Shift from His Original Game Arc

Tommy’s journey in this tumultuous world reflects a desire to carve out happiness despite the chaos. The most compelling motive for his Seattle expedition might stem from a wish to honor Joel by bringing back Ellie, as she is essentially family to him. However, considering the narrative developments, it would have been reasonable for Tommy to refrain from such a journey, especially given that he now has a child. This shift in storytelling creates a sense of expectation that the writers will carefully develop his motivations. I hope that the rationale behind his venture to Seattle will feel authentic and not just convenient for the sake of plot progression.
