The Dark Redesign of the Fantastic Four Illustrates How They Could Be Terrifying Villains

The Fantastic Four have been iconic defenders of Earth since their debut in the 1960s. However, their extensive history as heroes raises an intriguing question: what if they harnessed their exceptional abilities for villainy instead? A recent Marvel redesign raises this possibility, showcasing a chilling transformation as the Fantastic Four become the Frightful Four.

In this alternate narrative, they abandon their heroic endeavors, instead banding together as a fearsome villainous group that wreaks havoc and helps craft a world under the protection of Doctor Doom, reimagined here as Doc Iron.

The Frightful Four attack Doom

Despite acquiring their formidable powers from cosmic rays during a space mission gone awry, Reed Richards’ return marks a shift from altruism to vengeance, effectively birthing the Frightful Four.

Marvel’s Frightful Four: A Sinister Reimagination

The Unstoppable Woman and Monsterman replace Invisible Woman and The Thing

In stark contrast to their familiar roles as Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, the Thing, and Human Torch, the Frightful Four embraces a darker path. Fuelled by paranoia from believing their mission to space—or his research—was sabotaged, Reed turns into Mr. Devious, on a relentless quest for revenge against humanity. His companions, now known as Monsterman, the Unstoppable Woman, and the Human Pyre, become unwitting accomplices in his diabolical plan, likened to henchmen in service of Reed’s vendetta, under the watchful eye of Doc Iron.

This isn’t Reed’s first foray into villainy, yet this time he is not alone in his downfall.

Beyond merely altering their identity, the Frightful Four upgrade their look, swapping their signature blue uniforms for sleek black attire. Both Reed Richards and Ben Grimm sport this menacing new aesthetic. Mr. Devious remains a formidable intellect, providing his team with his patented innovations, akin to those that previously benefited the Fantastic Four. For example, Sue gains an advantage with specialized thermal lining that conceals her heat signature, while Monsterman dons a sophisticated exoskeleton designed to counteract Doc Iron’s gravity projector. Although the Human Pyre doesn’t seem to receive any notable enhancements, this may be attributed to Johnny’s quickly fleeting existence in this timeline.

Reed Richards’ previous incarnation as the Maker makes it abundantly clear that he possesses the capability to inflict unparalleled chaos. When Johnny glimpses another timeline tainted by Reed’s wounded pride, it’s evident that with the Frightful Four by his side, this version of the character could unleash even greater devastation. While their brief duration in this alternate scenario leaves us questioning the extent of their chaos, one thing is clear: if the Frightful Four were to enter the primary timeline, the consequences could be catastrophic.

The Fantastic Four remain one of Marvel’s leading superhero collectives, yet their alternate, villainous personas as the Frightful Four reveal a darker potential lurking beneath their heroic facade.
