The Amazing Race Season 37 Episode 5 Recap: Teams Encounter Live Vote and Unexpected U-Turn Consequences

The fifth episode of The Amazing Race Season 37 aired on April 2, 2025, marking a pivotal moment in the competition with the introduction of a live voting twist. Hosted by Phil Keoghan, the episode unfolded at the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Ubud, Bali, where teams were tasked with determining which two pairs would be subjected to a double U-Turn.

During this live vote, each team needed to select one competitor to hinder, leading to a situation where the two pairs receiving the most votes would face a series of challenges. Ultimately, Ana and Jonathan, along with Lori and Scott, were the two teams most affected, each receiving four votes, while Nick and Mike Fiorito garnered just one.

Overview of Episode 5 in The Amazing Race Season 37

Post-voting, teams made their way to Pantai Pandawa beach, where they faced a choice between two Detour options: transporting 60 coconuts across the beach using a bicycle or assembling a coral cage with five specific coral species for ocean planting.

Most teams opted for the coconut delivery due to its perceived efficiency. However, Ana and Jonathan, and Lori and Scott, found themselves obligated to complete both tasks following the U-Turn twist.

Initially, Ana and Jonathan attempted the coral cage construction but faced hurdles due to miscommunication regarding the coral placement. This led to multiple checks and corrections before they could proceed. Likewise, Lori and Scott experienced similar delays, resulting in significant time spent at the Detour site.

Other teams exhibited varying efficiencies with their chosen Detour tasks. For example, Alyssa and Josiah Borden successfully completed the coconut transport in two trips, while other teams had to make additional journeys based on their strategies.

Carson McCalley and Jack Dodge, as well as Mark and Brett, opted for the coral task, drawn by their preference for aquatic activities. After finishing their initial challenge, Ana and Jonathan shifted to the coconut task, but their speed was affected by physical fatigue, the heat, and Ana’s previous apprehension about water, which impacted their performance during both tasks on The Amazing Race.

Roadblock Challenge and Elimination Results

Once the Detour was finished, teams proceeded to Nusa Dua Beach for the Roadblock challenge. Here, one team member had to retrieve a surfboard with a unique design, paddle out, and locate a surfer featuring the same decal. Teams arriving early at this challenge included Carson and Jack and Brett and Mark, who adeptly completed the task.

Brett located the matching decal first, with Jack closely trailing. The two teams raced to the Pit Stop at Taksu Art Stage, where Brett and Mark claimed victory, earning $10,000 in cash.

Alyssa and Josiah finished in third place, followed closely by Pops and Jeff Bailey in fourth. Han and Holden Nguyen took fifth, while Erika and Melinda Papadeas arrived in seventh, just ahead of Nick and Mike.

Unfortunately for Ana and Jonathan and Lori and Scott, they reached the Roadblock in the last positions. Jonathan struggled with heat exhaustion, while Scott battled the ocean’s waves. Both teams eventually completed the task but ended up last at the Pit Stop, resulting in Lori and Scott’s elimination from the race.
