Takehiro Hira Joins the Cast of Lionsgate’s Karoshi
Takehiro Hira, recognized by North American viewers for his Emmy-nominated role in FX’s acclaimed series Shogun, is set to join the ensemble for Karoshi, an exciting action-thriller from Lionsgate.
Leading the film is Teo Yoo, who gained prominence through A24’s romantic drama Past Lives. The cast also features Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo and Isabel May from 1923. The script is crafted by Takashi Doscher, known for the 2019 dystopian thriller Only, who will also be directing the project.
Producers with Proven Success
This film boasts a team of accomplished producers. Chad Stahelski, celebrated for directing the John Wick series, collaborates with Alex Young and Jason Spitz under their 87Eleven Entertainment banner, which has secured a first-look deal with Lionsgate.
A Hidden Plot with Cultural Depth
While concrete details about the plot and characters remain under wraps, initial descriptions suggest that Karoshi will blend corporate intrigue with elements of samurai culture. Set against a backdrop of a Japanese-inspired New York City, the narrative is anticipated to feature a compelling revenge theme. Notably, “karoshi”in Japanese translates to the phenomenon of sudden death due to overwork.
Insiders reveal that Hira’s character will serve as the film’s antagonist, adding tension and depth to the storyline.

Takehiro Hira’s Recent and Upcoming Projects
In his memorable performance in Shogun, Hira portrayed the formidable Japanese warlord Ishido Kazunari, earning nominations for both an Emmy and a Critics’ Choice Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Earlier this year, he appeared alongside Cate Blanchett in Rumours and took on the role of the Japanese prime minister in Marvel’s upcoming Captain America: Brave New World.
Looking ahead, Hira is slated to star in Lionsgate’s crime film Tornado and is set to appear in Rental Family from Searchlight, alongside Brendan Fraser. Additionally, he will reprise his role in Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
