From Classroom to Hollywood: The Remarkable Journey of Joe Cote
Four years ago, a high school English teacher took to Reddit to share a gripping short story that featured twists reminiscent of Gone Girl. Today, Joe Cote is experiencing a plot twist of his own as his literary creation transitions to the silver screen.
A Promising Film Project in the Works
Currently, Cote’s story is set to be developed into a feature film, with Sydney Sweeney attached as both a star and producer. Adding to the excitement, Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth, best known for his work on Forrest Gump, is tasked with adapting the script.
Warner Bros. successfully secured the film rights amidst fierce competition, which marks a significant milestone for Cote, placing him in the spotlight of the entertainment industry. This opportunity arose when Aaron Folbe from Underground Entertainment discovered Cote’s story and reached out to him for representation.
Plot Overview: A Tale of Deception
The premise of Cote’s story, titled I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl So I Could Rob Her Family, revolves around a young woman who unexpectedly appears at a family’s home a decade after their 18-year-old daughter vanished. Her intention is to convince the family that she is their long-lost child and stay just long enough to seize some valuables before making her escape.
Key Talent Behind the Scenes
As of now, a director has yet to be named, but Roth is set to begin work on the screenplay. Sweeney will lead the cast and produce via her company, Fifty-Fifty Films, alongside Trevor Engelson and Folbe from Underground, Steven Schneider from Room 101, and Mira Yoon and Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment. Additionally, Cote will serve as an executive producer, further integrating his vision into the project.
Sydney Sweeney: Hollywood’s Rising Star
Sweeney has established herself as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after talents, contributing her star power to several successful projects. Her recent film, Anyone But You, co-starring Glenn Powell, has exceeded box office expectations, while her production Immaculate for Neon has received critical acclaim. Her breakout performances in Euphoria and The White Lotus earned her Emmy nominations, solidifying her status as a prominent figure in the industry. She is represented by Paradigm Agency and Hansen Jacobson.
Eric Roth: A Veteran Voice in Screenwriting
Roth brings extensive experience to the project, with a portfolio that includes acclaimed films such as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, A Star Is Born, Dune: Part One, and Killers of the Flower Moon. He is represented by CAA, Lenore Entertainment Group, and Jackoway Austen.
Furthermore, Cote has a collection of other stories waiting to be explored and developed under the aegis of Underground Entertainment.
