As we approach the much-anticipated S.W.A.T. series finale, fans are increasingly focused on the resolution of key storylines, particularly regarding the fate of Hicks, portrayed by Patrick St. Esprit. The recent episode, season 8, episode 18, appears to bring Hicks’ narrative arc to an unexpected conclusion. After a season filled with conflict against Deputy Chief Bennett (Merrin Dungey), it seems that Bennett has triumphed, resulting in Hicks being forced out of the job he cherishes. This outcome not only disappoints fans but also raises concerns about the direction of the series.
Given that Hicks is one of the final four original cast members remaining, his character deserves a more respectful farewell. It’s evident that Hondo (Shemar Moore) and the rest of the 20-Squad are not pleased with how Hicks has been treated, and there are indications that Hondo is not prepared to step into Hicks’ shoes. If the intention was to depict Hicks’ resignation as his retirement, such a significant moment should have been saved for the series finale of S.W.A.T..

Bennett Forces Hicks to Leave S.W.A.T.

In the eighth season’s penultimate episode, Hondo learns from Deacon about a list of potential successors for command within the team. Concerned for Hicks’ position, Hondo takes it upon himself to communicate this information to his boss. Surprisingly, Hicks remains unfazed and believes he has the backing of the command structure, including the Chief, with whom he had recently played golf.
However, the episode takes a grim turn when Hicks is informed of a reassignment to lead a new task force focused on art theft. While this may be an ideal opportunity for an inexperienced captain, it is certainly not suitable for a seasoned veteran like Hicks. When Deputy Chief Bennett insists that even the Chief has approved this move, Hicks opts to resign rather than endure a forced demotion that would diminish his career significance. Bennett’s reaction indicates that her goal of undermining Hicks has been achieved.
Why Losing Hicks Ahead of S.W.A.T.’s Finale Is So Disappointing
S.W.A.T. Is Cheated Out of a Celebration of Hicks’ Career

While it was anticipated that Hicks might depart as the series draws to a close, given his nearing retirement age and past considerations, it is disappointing that such an original cast member will not see the series through to its conclusion, especially with no season 9 on the horizon. As a foundational member of the team, Hicks deserves a proper send-off. His dedication as a team player throughout the series highlights the inconsistency in the Chief’s decision to overlook his contributions and adhere to Bennett’s agenda.
Though Hondo’s promotion from Sergeant to Commander may seem implausible, the ideal scenario would have been for Hicks to gracefully exit the scene, allowing for the introduction of new leadership in the series finale with a fitting farewell. This moment could have been an opportunity for the show to convey a heartfelt message about retirement and legacy, as Hicks passes the baton to someone new. While resigning allows Hicks to maintain his pension and command respect from his team, the writers’ choices have deprived viewers of a deserving celebration of his impactful career.
