- Actor Anthony Carrigan highlights that Superman possesses distinct heart, intelligence, and originality.
- Reports indicate that Superman features tonal elements reminiscent of both Wonder Woman and Guardians of the Galaxy.
In a recent discussion, Anthony Carrigan, who portrays Rex Mason (a.k.a. Metamorpho) in the new Superman film, expressed his reluctance to directly compare the film to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. However, he acknowledged some similarities, particularly given that both films are helmed by James Gunn.
This upcoming Superman movie marks the inaugural project from the DC Universe following Gunn and Peter Safran’s strategic overhaul of DC Studios, which aims to rejuvenate the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). With a release date set just over three months away, there is considerable anticipation surrounding this superhero film, described by many as a strong contender for one of the year’s premier cinematic experiences. While comparisons to Guardians of the Galaxy are prevalent, Carrigan holds a divergent view.
Distinctive Tones in Superman and Guardians of the Galaxy

Reports suggest that Gunn’s rendition of Superman exhibits qualities similar to his previous Marvel project. A Portuguese fan site provided an early review from a test screening, indicating that Superman shares tonal traits with DCEU’s acclaimed Wonder Woman and the original Guardians of the Galaxy. Movie analyst Jeff Sneider also echoed these sentiments on The Hot Mic, claiming, “I’m hearing it’s very Gunn Guardians-like in tone.”Nonetheless, an alternative source from a separate test screening refuted this claim, stressing that while the film does contain amusing moments, it should not be categorized purely as a comedy.
Furthermore, the majority of footage showcased in trailers reportedly originates from the film’s initial segments, leaving much of the narrative unexplored. The source contended that many circulating rumors are “dead wrong,”reinforcing Carrigan’s assertion that Superman stands apart from Guardians of the Galaxy. The comparisons between the two films present both advantages and disadvantages. Fans who appreciate the lively and humorous tone of Guardians might find similar enjoyment in Superman. It is also worth noting that Guardians features a dynamic ensemble cast, which could parallel interactions between Superman, Krypto the Superdog, and newly introduced character Supergirl, played by Milly Alcock. Ultimately, audiences will need to form their own assessments regarding the film’s tone after its premiere.
Superman is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
