Suits LA Episode 7 Review: Embracing Comedy Elements for a Stronger Show Moving Forward

Suits LA is being promoted as a spin-off of the successful Suits series, yet episode 7 demonstrates that it leans more towards comedy than drama. Following the trial of Lester Thompson, Ted Black and his team attempt to restore normalcy, while Stuart Lane transitions into his newly established firm. The series incorporates flashbacks to Ted’s past in New York, revealing that this show offers a unique twist—it’s a legal dramedy rather than a straightforward legal drama.

Having successfully defended Lester Thompson, Ted Black is now free from the stress of his first trial and can refocus on solidifying his firm after the unexpected departure of Stuart Lane. Fortunately, he has recruited some capable individuals to fill the void. Just as a sense of stability seems to settle in, Ted receives news that compels him to reconnect with his former colleagues, redirecting his frustrations.

Thus far, the character portrayal in the series has been somewhat erratic; characters like Stuart exude volatility with his noticeable mood swings and bridge-burning antics, yet he seeks camaraderie through games like D&D. Similarly, Leah Power stands out as an entertainment lawyer with potential, albeit seeming somewhat misplaced within the corporate framework due to her preference for the creative flair of the industry.

It’s clear that Suits LA is intentionally embracing its comedic elements. While these characteristics have deepened the characters’ arcs, they often land awkwardly, leaving viewers questioning their effectiveness. The show strives to set itself apart from its predecessor, yet the difficulty in balancing humor with drama is palpable; some jokes appear somewhat lackluster.

However, this humorous lens allows for a fresh perspective on character dynamics. Ted Black, despite being positioned at the narrative’s core, struggles to resonate; his frequent emotional fluctuations and off-putting demeanor make him a less engaging lead. Contrarily, the vibrant supporting characters carry much of the series’ charm, enhancing the overall experience.

Suits LA: Quirky with a Unique Appeal

Creating compelling legal dramas, or comedies, comes with its complexities. The legal process can often appear tedious, filled with bureaucratic monotony that lacks excitement. The original Suits managed to transmute legal proceedings into something thrilling and stylish, a feat that set a high bar for any follow-up series. In contrast, where Suits thrived on romantic entanglements and high-stake scenarios, Suits LA is still carving out its niche.

As the show delves deeper, I find myself losing enthusiasm for Ted’s storyline, which may pose challenges for future seasons. The shadow of the original Suits looms large over Suits LA, making it daunting for the newer series to match its nine-season legacy and loyal fanbase. Recognized for its quirky humor intertwined with serious legal cases, there lies potential if the show can refine its approach. If not, its prospects of lasting beyond the current season may be uncertain.

The ongoing flashbacks intended to elaborate on Ted’s mysterious past often disrupt the episode’s pacing, becoming distractions rather than engaging subplots. My interest in Ted Black has waned, and instead, I yearn to discover more about the supporting cast that drives the series forward, particularly shown in episode 7 of Suits LA.

New episodes of Suits LA premiere every Sunday at 9 PM ET on NBC.
