As Marvel prepares to reinvigorate its cosmic narrative, the beloved character Star-Lord, played by Peter Quill, is set for a triumphant return, sporting a fresh design influenced by the iconic sci-fi archetype, Flash Gordon. Quill, known for his fascination with Earth’s pop culture, finds an apt muse in this pulp hero while he strives to embody the essence of an intergalactic adventurer.
In June 2025, Marvel will debut a new series titled Imperial, which promises to reshape the cosmic landscape significantly. In this storyline, galactic empires will topple as Star-Lord, Nova, the Hulk, and Charles Xavier from the X-Men grapple for control of various space-faring civilizations. Notably, each character will receive a redesigned costume that complements their new roles within the Marvel Universe.

After his previous appearance in the 2023 Guardians of the Galaxy series, where Quill faced significant challenges and personal failures, his return in Imperial will throw him into a new reality characterized by political maneuvering and interstellar conflict. Recent promotional content from Marvel has showcased Star-Lord’s new costume, and artist Federico Vicentini shares insights about the creative process:
I love that every creator has their own version, and in this case it was an even better experience because I could create all-new looks for the characters. When creating the costumes, I wanted to go back a bit to the past, such as bringing back Star-Lord’s helmet, giving Nova an aviator-style jacket, and taking inspiration from classic heroes like Flash Gordon. J’Son’s suit also went back to a more classic style. Peter will also have a more “real”suit to match his father’s.
Imperial #1 is scheduled for release on June 4, featuring contributions from renowned writer Jonathan Hickman, along with artists Iban Coello and Federico Vicentini.
A New Chapter Begins: A Dark Era for Peter Quill’s Star-Lord
Peter Approaches His Father’s Shadow

During the 2000s, Marvel’s cosmic characters thrived, headlining their own series well beyond the familiar confines of Earth. This period produced the critically acclaimed Annihilation event, celebrated as one of Marvel’s finest storylines, along with the defining iterations of Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy, which later transitioned to the big screen. Alas, as time progressed, the cosmic aspects of the Marvel Universe faded, relegating space to a backdrop for terrestrial heroes rather than a setting for ongoing exploration.
Star-Lord’s latest attire reflects a blend of ’80s pulp sci-fi and ’90s superhero aesthetics, featuring epaulettes and a cowl that frames his face. Both Nova and Star-Lord appear outfitted as intrepid adventurers prepared for challenging environments.
However, Imperial aims to rejuvenate this narrative, serving as a limited series designed to elevate the stakes across Marvel’s cosmic realm. With iconic figures like Hulk, Star-Lord, and Xavier taking charge of alien worlds, the series will be pivotal in introducing new conflicts and objectives that compel interstellar storytelling for the foreseeable future. Writer Jonathan Hickman is known for navigating the moral complexities of heroism in his works, making it likely that Star-Lord will transition from a roguish hero to a much darker character.

Vicentini’s art (shown above) depicts a scene in a bustling spaceport, highlighting interactions between Nova and Star-Lord, alongside a reminder not to serve Quill behind the bar. While this may imply a rehash of the familiar Star-Lord character, Vicentini’s reference to J’Son hints at deeper narratives. J’Son, the former ruler of the Spartax Empire and Peter’s nefarious father, has consistently sought to integrate his son back into royal life. Considering Hickman’s thematic preferences, it’s highly plausible that J’Son has devised a plan to entwine Peter in the complex web of interstellar politics.
Having previously redefined the X-Men saga with the groundbreaking House of X and Powers of X, Hickman has set high expectations for a similarly transformative experience within Marvel’s cosmic sphere. Anticipation is mounting as Imperial prepares to establish a major new trajectory for Peter Quill’s Star-Lord, complete with a sophisticated new outfit befitting his evolved role in the galaxy.
Imperial #1 is slated for release on June 4, exclusively from Marvel Comics.
