Stardew Valley Guide: Obtaining the Dinosaur Egg

As players enhance their farms in Stardew Valley, expanding their capability to raise various animals, they will discover that while most can be acquired from Marnie, some interesting species require unique methods to obtain. Among these is the dinosaur, a type of animal that even experienced players may overlook despite their acquaintance with Pepper Rex foes in the Skull Cavern.

Updated on April 22, 2025 by Renri Seong: Dinosaur Eggs are a fascinating addition to the collectibles players can gather and hatch in Stardew Valley. Distinct from chicken and duck eggs, these eggs are considered Artifacts and cannot be purchased. With the release of the 1.6 update, various changes were made concerning how to acquire and utilize Dinosaur Eggs. This guide has been thoroughly revised with new information tailored for the Stardew Valley 1.6 version across all platforms.

How to Obtain Dinosaur Eggs

Pepper Rex monsters encountered in Mines

There are several methods to obtain a Dinosaur Egg in Stardew Valley. The most popular approach is defeating Pepper Rex creatures found in the Skull Cavern. However, the 1.6 update introduced additional ways to acquire these intriguing eggs:

  • While adventuring in the Skull Cavern, you may access a Prehistoric Floor. These rare Infested Floors spawn from Floor 7 down, featuring Pepper Rexes that hold a 10% chance to drop a Dinosaur Egg upon their defeat.
  • Players can win a Dinosaur Egg at any time of the year during the Crane Game available at the movie theater. Be sure to check for rare prizes.
  • Fishing up treasure chests or uncovering artifact spots in the Stardew Valley Mountains can also yield Dinosaur Eggs.
  • With the 1.6 update, max-friendship pet dogs occasionally bring Dinosaur Eggs in the morning when you pet them.

Utilizing Dinosaur Eggs

Despite its appearance as an egg, the Dinosaur Egg is classified as an Artifact rather than an animal product, allowing players to donate it to the museum. To confirm whether you’ve donated the egg, check its description in your menu; if it indicates, “Gunter can tell you more about this if you donate it to the museum,”it remains un-donated. Once donated, the Dinosaur Egg cannot be reclaimed.

Hatching Dinosaurs

Players are able to incubate and hatch Dinosaur Eggs to raise their own dinosaurs. Unlike the larger fire-breathing Pepper Rexes, the dinosaurs raised will eventually lay their eggs upon maturation. It’s best to place your first Dinosaur Egg in an incubator located in either a Big Coop or Deluxe Coop instead of opting to donate, sell, or gift it.

Creating Dinosaur Mayonnaise

Upon gathering a collection of Dinosaur Eggs, you can transform them into Dinosaur Mayonnaise through a Mayonnaise Machine, which sells for 800g. Make sure to reserve at least one jar for the Junimo package at the Movie Theater.

Gift Options

Dialogue option with Penny

Dinosaur Eggs serve as unique gifts to various characters. In the 1.6 update, they are appreciated by Alex, Dwarf, Penny, and Demetrius. However, they are considered disliked by all other villagers.

Tailoring Projects

Using a Dinosaur Egg in the Sewing Machine at Emily’s house (or one provided after completing “Rock Rejuvenation”) will yield a Dinosaur Hat accessory. Meanwhile, applying Dinosaur Mayonnaise will produce Dinosaur Pants.

Sales Options

Lastly, players can sell Dinosaur Eggs; however, Dinosaur Mayonnaise typically fetches a higher price compared to even an iridium-quality Dinosaur Egg. If you have the Artisan profession, the potential sale price of Dinosaur Mayonnaise rises to 1120g. In general, converting Dinosaur Eggs into Mayonnaise is the most profitable route unless you have read the Treasure Appraisal Guide (version 1.6). In that case, any Dinosaur Egg classified as silver star or higher should be sold directly instead of processed into mayonnaise.

Here’s a pricing comparison:
