The impressive visual effects that bring Jim Carrey’s dual roles in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 to life have garnered significant acclaim. In a recent episode by the VFX experts at Corridor Crew, the complexities of creating this sequel are thoughtfully examined. Paramount Pictures continues to expand its successful adaptation of Sega’s iconic video game franchise, with Ben Schwartz reprising his role as the titular blue character, Sonic, alongside a roster of fan-favorite companions. Carrey, playing the role of Dr. Ivo Robotnik, delivers a captivating performance as Sonic’s boastful nemesis, evolving from a government ally to a mad scientist with a vendetta.
Carrey first emerged as Robotnik in the original 2020 film, wherein the U.S. government enlists the brilliant yet twisted scientist to capture Sonic after a catastrophic energy surge causes citywide blackouts. While the first installment sees Robotnik exiled on the Mushroom Planet, the 2022 sequel pivots to his quest for the powerful Master Emerald, enlisting the formidable Knuckles the Echidna (voiced by Idris Elba) as he plots revenge. However, after Sonic and Knuckles reconcile their differences, they unite to thwart Robotnik once again, sending him back into the shadows—until an unexpected copycat scientist appears.

Innovative Techniques Enabled the Robotnik Family to Co-Exist on Screen

After a time spent hidden away in his latest mobile command base, Robotnik resurfaces in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Team Sonic, eager to track down Shadow the Hedgehog (voiced by Keanu Reeves), seeks out Robotnik with the hope of leveraging his expertise. However, their partnership is short-lived when it becomes clear that Ivo’s grandfather, Gerald Robotnik (also portrayed by Carrey), has taken a nefarious turn, teaming up with Shadow to exact revenge. Excited to reconnect with his familial roots, Ivo unwittingly aligns himself with Gerald and Shadow, unaware of their ulterior motives.
Examining the dynamic between Ivo and Gerald through various scenes—particularly a humorous virtual family-bonding session—Corridor Crew reveals how the filmmakers employed an array of techniques to capture both characters in the same shot effectively. As VFX artist Sam notes:
I was like “How do they do it? I’m trying to get some behind-the-scenes pictures.”The answer he had was they used everything. Nothing was off the table, everything from motion control, split-screens, we have our body doubles, we have our fully CGI heads. We also effectively have deep fakes in some of these shots, potentially.
This meticulous approach culminated in a seamless infiltration dance sequence, where careful editing, split-screen techniques, and multiple takes allowed both Carreys to share the stage effortlessly.

Reflections on Carrey’s Performances in Sonic the Hedgehog 3
A Standout Star in the Sonic Franchise

Carrey’s portrayal of Robotnik has undoubtedly become one of the franchise’s most cherished aspects. Audiences have witnessed his transformation from a diabolical scientist to an iconic antagonist reminiscent of the original video games. Alongside his trusty companion Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub), Carrey’s charismatic performance has consistently stood out throughout the series.
The introduction of two distinct Robotnik characters, both played by Carrey, has created a wave of excitement leading up to Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Despite the actor’s dual role, the sophisticated VFX work and Carrey’s skillful performances ensure that Ivo and Gerald are distinguishable from one another. While the future of Carrey’s involvement in the franchise remains uncertain, his contributions have undeniably been pivotal to its success.
