During the mid-season premiere of Sister Wives, which aired on April 20, Christine Brown shared her reflections on the appearance expectations enforced by her former husband, Kody Brown. Accompanied by her partner, David Woolley, she opened up about the pressures she and other wives faced regarding their looks. Christine remarked:
“He liked makeup. It was like, you had to always, always look nice.”
Insights into Kody Brown’s Expectations
Christine recounted numerous instances throughout her marriage where appearance took precedence over other responsibilities. For example, during camping trips, while she and Janelle were busy cooking and cleaning, Robyn dedicated her time to hair and makeup. These dynamics, according to Christine, frequently resulted in heightened tensions within her marriage.
Reflecting on Personal Experiences
Christine discussed how Kody consistently urged her and the other wives to uphold a certain aesthetic standard. She elaborated:
“We’d go camping and Janelle and I would be sitting there busting our butts getting breakfast made, cleaning up the mess and honestly, Robyn would be doing her makeup forever and doing our kids’ hair and doing her hair and making sure everybody looked good.”
She indicated that Kody often focused on complimenting the appearance of others while she and Janelle were engaged with meal preparations. This distraction was common, occurring “so many times in my marriage,”she noted. Christine added:
“[Kody] put pressure on me to look good, or to make sure my hair was done, or to make sure my makeup was on.”
As a result, Christine revealed feelings of insecurity and uncertainty frequently plagued her, stemming from their ongoing habit of “comparing”within their relationship.

During a confessional segment, Janelle Brown addressed Christine’s frustrations and echoed her sentiments about the group’s camping experience. She acknowledged Christine’s distress regarding Robyn’s focus on her makeup, yet took a different approach:
“I was just like, yes, it’s irritating, but I’m going to still have fun here.”
Robyn provided her perspective on that camping trip, stating that she was six months pregnant and dealing with sickness. She shared her struggle with being ill while her co-wives prepared breakfast:
“I was trying to quickly ‘get ready’ for the day.”
Meri Brown also shared her views regarding Kody’s penchant for appearances, recalling:
“Kody’s always wanted people around him to look good. I remember when he and I were first dating, he would take me out and buy outfits because he wanted me to look good.”
Kody and Robyn’s Relationship Status
In addition, Christine expressed feelings of being overshadowed, insinuating that Robyn was placed on a pedestal while she and the other wives felt they were left “lacking.”Reflecting on the family dynamics, Kody commented:
“It didn’t ever feel like I was not in the doghouse with somebody.”
