Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Rookie season 7, episode 12. The latest episode, titled “April Fools,”from The Rookie season 7 premiered on Tuesday, April 1, on ABC. This particular episode was filled with thrilling narratives, one of which drew inspiration from James DeMonaco’s Purge franchise. A social media intern’s post claiming that all crime is legal triggered a wave of mayhem throughout Los Angeles, plunging the city into chaos. As this unfolds, Officer Nolan is faced with the challenge of managing the disorder with the assistance of his new rookie partner, who had to undergo a transfer due to issues with their previous training officer.
Concurrently, Wesley finds himself immersed in a murder investigation that must be resolved within a tight 24-hour deadline. He turns to Angela and Nyla for support, leading to the shocking revelation that Detective Berman is the true culprit behind the murder and has framed an innocent man named Ben Dover. True to the April Fools theme, the light-hearted antics of Tim and Lucy, known collectively as Chenford, play a vital role, as they indulge in a day of playful escapades, justifying their secrecy with the holiday spirit.
A recent interview with ScreenRant features Shawn Ashmore sharing his thoughts on the Purge-themed plot, Wesley’s challenging case, the potential return of Monica, and the playful antics of Chenford.
Ashmore’s Favorite Cases Involve Wesley and Angela
“Their love is so strong that their annoyance with each other is just charming.”

Going into this episode, my initial thought was, “Oh, we’re in for an April Fools themed episode.”What’s fascinating about The Rookie is its unique balance of lighter, comedic episodes intertwined with those that present serious themes, providing refreshing variety. As I anticipated, we explored Wesley’s case alongside Nolan’s new rookie and Chenford’s antics, only to be jolted by a sudden outbreak of chaos reminiscent of a Purge-style night. The show excels at portraying the duality of everyday life and the intense pressure first responders often encounter.
One of my concerns was ensuring that the transition from comedic elements to serious conflict did not feel abrupt. The writers manage this tonal shift skillfully, maintaining a grounded narrative. Overall, I thought it was a very engaging episode.
Were you taken aback by the finale of Wesley’s case? Did you suspect Berman was behind the murders?
At that moment, I could sense where the plot was heading. It’s enjoyable to see Wesley relying on Angela for help – it’s a dynamic I cherish, like when Wesley finds himself blackmailed for a favor. Their relationship reflects a love that’s both secure and amusingly irritating, allowing for moments that are charming and lively. They were crafted as very different characters stimulating one another, which enhances their relationship as their connection deepens through delightful interactions.
Ashmore Weighs In on Monica’s Return in The Rookie Season 7
“He wronged her a long time ago, and he’s still paying for it.”

Wesley finds himself entangled with his former love, Monica, following her reappearance in the last episode.
I’ve known Bridget [Regan] for years and always knew she’d be superb for this role. The complexity of their past relationship adds depth; Wesley’s earlier indiscretion creates a compelling narrative that brings Monica back into his life. As the writers evolve the storyline, it’s clear Wesley made mistakes that haunt him, and having Monica return can stir up significant tension and drama in The Rookie universe.
Is there potential for another confrontation between the two this season?
I can’t confirm anything, but it’s certainly within the realm of possibility. The writers excel at weaving in characters, creating dynamics that feel fresh even after absences. Fans should definitely stay tuned!
Ashmore Enjoys Chenford’s Ongoing Will-They-Won’t-They Dynamic
“I’m feeling much better after this episode. Obviously, they still are very into each other.”

Post-Chenford breakup, how did you feel about their future together?
The fan response to my comments about their relationship was overwhelming. A lot of people, particularly those who hadn’t seen the latest episode, expressed their frustration. However, it’s clear they share a strong connection, and the on-again-off-again dynamic keeps things intriguing. Like everyone else, I’m interested to see how it unfolds, as relationships can evolve in unpredictable ways.
Ashmore Hopes for More Wesley and Tim Scenes in The Rookie
“Maybe Tim just needs to spend a little more time with Wesley, and they need to become bros.”

With Angela considering Tim family, do you foresee more interactions between Tim and Wesley?
Character development continuously evolves, and the writers love to throw characters together to see what chemistry emerges. I would be thrilled to see increased interactions between Tim and Wesley; there’s a potential for unique dynamics in their relationship. They both bring out different aspects of each other, and watching this grow could be very rewarding for the viewers. Perhaps more time together could cultivate a friendship or brotherhood down the line.
