In the exciting new update of Sea of Thieves Season 15, players are introduced to an innovative weapon known as the Hunting Spear. This formidable throwing device is specifically crafted for hunting various wildlife and boasts versatility in combat, making it effective against players, PVE foes, and even enemy ships.
If you’ve managed to acquire a Hunting Spear, you might be curious about the best ways to utilize this throwable weapon, which can also be launched from cannons. In this guide, we will explore how to obtain the Hunting Spear and maximize its potential in your adventures.
Acquiring the Hunting Spear in Sea of Thieves

To get your hands on a Hunting Spear, you will need to purchase it or discover it in the world. Unfortunately, the spear cannot be acquired directly from your ship’s Armory, requiring you to seek it elsewhere. Each Hunting Spear costs 250 gold, and players can buy up to five at a time from any Outpost or Seapost. However, note that there is a restocking cooldown for each Company Shop, and you can only carry one spear at a time. This means you’ll need to transport each spear back to your ship individually.
Besides buying, players can also stumble upon Hunting Spears scattered throughout the game. Similar to the Trident of Dark Tides, they can be discovered in various locations such as:
- Shipwrecks
- Beaches on island shores
- Defeated foes like the Kraken, Megalodons, and Skeleton Ships
Hunting Spears can also be sold as treasure for around 87 gold. However, be cautious as they can be lost when diving to destinations. To safeguard your spears, ensure you sail to your intended destinations with them aboard your ship.
Utilizing the Hunting Spear in Sea of Thieves

The Hunting Spear serves several purposes as a throwable weapon which can be aimed at players, PVE enemies, and even ships when shot from a cannon. Here’s how to effectively use the Hunting Spear:
Throwing the Hunting Spear

Players can hurl the Hunting Spear at various targets, including hostile creatures like the Kraken and different species of Megalodons, such as the infamous Redmaw or Barnacled Dread. The spear can be thrown both close-up and at a distance, granting you flexibility in combat scenarios.
To throw the Hunting Spear, if you are using an Xbox, hold down the left trigger to aim the spear and press the right trigger to launch it. You can even charge the throw for greater distance by holding the right trigger before releasing it.
When aiming at a charging Megalodon, a well-timed throw can halt its advance, potentially saving your ship from significant damage. Additionally, a charged throw can eliminate a shark in one shot. It’s also crucial to remember that when lodged in solid surfaces, other players can retrieve the spear and utilize it against you, adding an element of strategy to its use.
Each hit on another player with the Hunting Spear inflicts about 75 damage, but, unfortunately, the spear disappears upon contact. Missing your target allows you to collect the Hunting Spear again and try once more.
Using the Hunting Spear from Cannons

In addition to hand throwing, the Hunting Spear can be loaded into cannons to inflict damage on enemy ships. This strategy not only creates holes in opponent vessels but also complicates their repair efforts, as they must extract the spear from the breach before addressing the damage.
When pulled out, the spear creates an even larger opening, increasing water entry and prolonging repair time. Additionally, launching a Hunting Spear from a cannon amplifies its power, enabling you to potentially one-shot certain enemies, particularly when targeting land foes from your ship.
