Scott M. Gimple Discusses the Longevity of The Walking Dead Franchise

The Walking Dead franchise’s chief content officer, Scott M. Gimple, recently discussed the potential future of this beloved zombie apocalypse series. Originating from Robert Kirkman’s acclaimed comic book series, the hit horror show first aired on AMC in 2010. It centered around a group of survivors, led by Andrew Lincoln’s character, Rick Grimes, as they strive to maintain their humanity amid the chaos of a zombie outbreak. Although the main series concluded in 2022 after its 11th season, the Walking Dead universe continues to thrive through various spinoffs including The Ones Who Live, Daryl Dixon, and Dead City, with the latter two confirming new seasons on the horizon.

In a recent interview with SFX Magazine (reported by GamesRadar+), Gimple expressed his confidence that The Walking Dead could continue to captivate audiences until 2040 and possibly beyond. He emphasized that a rich cast of characters provides endless storytelling opportunities, which could lead to new seasons or spinoff series focusing on their journeys. Here’s what Gimple had to say:

“I do see that potential. The Walking Dead is about compelling characters in an unforgiving world, but one that is not without hope. Because the stakes are so high, the choices these characters make define them and change them, one way or another. That’s the stuff of a great story. And the scariness, the action, the emotion, the discovery… That can go on and on, as long as we have some terrific characters.

“There are characters from every Walking Dead series that I would love to tell stories with again, some picking up from the last time we saw them, maybe seeing some after a lot of time has passed. Robert Kirkman created indelible, addictive characters and we’ve always just tried to keep pace with him.”

While spinoffs such as Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond have drawn to a close, several other series are still actively exploring the Walking Dead narrative. The next anticipated installment, Dead City season 2, will premiere on May 4, and a third season for Daryl Dixon has also been confirmed following the success of its previous season. Gimple’s statements hint that these upcoming seasons might only be the beginning for these two series.

Additionally, the positive reception of The Ones Who Live has sparked speculation about future developments. Though initially designed as a limited series to conclude the arcs of Lincoln’s Rick and Michonne portrayed by Danai Gurira, there are potential hints of a second season. Gimple has indicated an interest in revisiting these beloved characters or even reviving the anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead.

One major challenge for franchises that persist for extended periods with multiple spinoffs is the risk of audience fatigue. Although The Walking Dead may have seen its peak, recent spinoffs have retained substantial viewership, indicating that there remains a strong interest in the series’ universe and its characters.

Upon its premiere in 2024, The Ones Who Live attracted three million viewers, marking the largest audience for a new AMC series in six years.

The latest spinoffs have demonstrated Gimple and his team’s willingness to take risks in storytelling and explore new narratives, which is essential for the ongoing success of The Walking Dead. As with any long-running series, freshness is crucial to maintain engagement. While the future visibility of the franchise remains to be seen, Gimple’s hopeful outlook suggests that the story is far from over.
