Scott Glenn Reflects on His Role in HBO’s The White Lotus
Renowned actor Scott Glenn initially hesitated to accept the role of Jim Hollinger in the third season of HBO’s hit series The White Lotus. He considered the character to be just another typical role for an older man until he decided to watch the series himself.
During an appearance on Thursday’s episode of The Daily Show, Glenn shared that he nearly turned down the opportunity. “I had just completed a project titled Eugene the Marine, which involved a lot of martial arts and dancing, and dealt with themes of ageism. The producers of The White Lotus sent me a description of an elderly character with a cane, and I thought, ‘No, thank you,'” he recounted.
However, after watching the series with his wife Carol, Glenn’s perspective shifted dramatically. “Within the first 15 minutes, I was completely engrossed. I realized I wanted to be involved in this project, so I reached out to its creator, Mike White, the next morning,” he explained.
Insights on the Mysterious Character
Michael Kosta, host of The Daily Show, probed Glenn about the enigmatic aspects of his character, asking whether he was involved in a potential murder plot or had any familial ties to other characters. “What can you share with us without spoiling anything?” Kosta inquired.
Glenn responded with a playful suggestion for viewers to stay tuned: “I can tell you, stay tuned,” he said with a smile, maintaining an air of intrigue around his role.
Navigating Contemporary Issues of Masculinity
As the conversation shifted back to the themes explored in The White Lotus, Kosta raised concerns about the portrayal of men grappling with complex struggles such as depression and revenge. He highlighted the current societal challenges, noting a “male friendship recession”and rising suicide rates. “What insights can we glean from older generations that could assist men today?” Kosta asked.
Staying true to his understated acting style, Glenn kept his response succinct yet thought-provoking, stating: “Never pay a tariff.” His enigmatic answer left the audience pondering the deeper implications of his words.
