Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill to Adapt Christopher Golden’s *Road of Bones*
Renowned filmmakers Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill are poised to bring a chilling adaptation of *Road of Bones*, a horror novel penned by best-selling author Christopher Golden, to life under the banner of Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems.
A Proven Horror Team
This dynamic duo, celebrated for their spine-tingling contributions to the horror genre through films like *Sinister*, *Doctor Strange*, and *The Black Phone*, will collaborate on the screenplay, with Derrickson taking the helm as director. They will also produce the film through their Crooked Highway production company.
Project Background
The adaptation signifies the inaugural project emerging from Crooked Highway’s first-look deal with Screen Gems and Sony. *Road of Bones* offers a supernatural horror experience set along Siberia’s Kolyma Highway—a real-world road constructed during the Stalinist era, utilizing forced labor from prisoners of the region’s notorious gulags. Historical accounts suggest that a staggering number of inmates died during the highway’s construction, leading to the belief that the roadway was built over unburied bodies due to the treacherous permafrost conditions.
A Gripping Narrative
Golden’s novel is characterized as a blend of folk horror and survival thriller, following an American documentarian drawn to the haunting history of the Kolyma Highway. As he ventures into one of the most frigid and isolated locations on the planet, he finds himself battling for his life amidst the chilling backdrop of the past. The book, published by St. Martin’s Press in 2022, showcases Golden’s knack for crafting immersive narratives.
Executive Production Team
The project will also feature contributions from executive producers Vince Cheng and Pete Donaldson. Golden, a New York Times best-selling author, has previously received accolades such as the Brad Stoker Awards for his 2017 work, *Ararat*, and the non-fiction anthology *Cut! Horror Writers on Horror Film*. Notably, Golden collaborates with comic book legend Mike Mignola and has co-created several titles within the shared Outerverse comic universe.
Following Recent Success
Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill are riding the wave of success from their recent Apple TV+ film, *The Gorge*, which premiered in February and has become the most successful launch in the platform’s history. Their upcoming project, *The Black Phone 2*, is set to be released on October 17 through Universal and Blumhouse.
