Scarlett Johansson Stays Away from Social Media Amid Film Promotion
Scarlett Johansson continues to stand out in Hollywood as one of the few A-list celebrities who opts to stay off social media, even as the promotional wave for her upcoming film, Jurassic World: Rebirth, ramps up.
In an interview with InStyle published recently, Johansson disclosed that Universal Pictures, the studio behind Jurassic World: Rebirth, suggested she join Instagram as part of the film’s marketing strategy set to launch on July 2. However, Johansson has firmly declined this offer.
Johansson expressed, “Today, I received an email from Universal saying, ‘Hey, would you consider joining Instagram in conjunction with the release of Jurassic World: Rebirth?’ There’s a considerable pressure to join social media.” She elaborated on her decision by questioning whether she could engage with social media while remaining true to herself, ultimately concluding that it didn’t align with her values.
Despite her absence from mainstream social media, Johansson recognizes its commercial benefits. She has made appearances on the Instagram account of her skincare brand, The Outset, showcasing a more lighthearted, less invasive approach to social media. “It’s amusing and can be fun,” she noted, adding that authenticity remains her top priority. “The work I produce is rooted in truth. If I were someone who genuinely enjoyed social media, I might consider it. But since I’m not, I’m confident that the film will perform well regardless,” she reassured.
Social Media Pressures in Hollywood
Johansson is not alone in her views. In a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, fellow actress Maya Hawke addressed the profound impact of social media on the film industry. She stated that the divide between being an actor and a celebrity has become increasingly murky in the digital age, with some casting directors factoring in an actor’s social media following when making hiring decisions.
“I find Instagram tedious,” Hawke remarked. “However, I understand the harsh reality that having a certain follower count can secure funding for a movie. This creates a challenging situation for artists who just want to create.” She recounted discussions with insightful directors who explained the importance of maintaining an Instagram presence, as production teams often require a specified number of collective followers among the cast.
Upcoming Role and Film Overview
In Jurassic World: Rebirth, Johansson stars as Zora Bennett, a covert operations expert tasked with securing vital genetic material from a small number of surviving dinosaurs, which are now housed in specialized biospheres five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion. The plot thickens as her character finds herself stranded with a civilian family on an island harboring a secret that could alter humanity’s future.
