Sandra Bullock’s Overlooked Horror-Thriller Revives Popularity on Streaming 18 Years After 8% Rotten Tomatoes Rating

Sandra Bullock has long been a fixture in Hollywood, captivating audiences since her breakout role alongside Keanu Reeves in the 1994 action-thriller adventure, Speed. Over the years, she has diversified her filmography, showcasing her talent across various genres, most notably in beloved comedies like Miss Congeniality, While You Were Sleeping, The Proposal, and The Heat. While these films are often at the forefront of her career, Bullock has not shied away from thrillers, boasting notable entries including the critically acclaimed Gravity (for which she received an Oscar nomination) and the Academy Award-winning drama The Blind Side.

In addition to her comedic and dramatic successes, Sandra Bullock has appeared in several horror-related films over her career. One of her most prominent roles in this genre is the 2018 post-apocalyptic film Bird Box, which, according to recent data, ranks as Netflix’s fifth most-watched movie to date. Bullock also starred in the chilling 1993 psychological thriller The Vanishing, a remake of the French-Dutch classic Spoorloos, and the 2007 film Premonition, which saw a resurgence of interest on streaming platforms.

It Has Hit a Major Top 10 Chart

Premonition is currently experiencing a revival, climbing its way up the charts of major streaming services. The film, told in a non-linear narrative, centers around Linda Hanson (played by Bullock), who grapples with premonitions of her husband Jim’s (Julian McMahon) impending demise. Despite its lukewarm reception from critics—boasting an unfortunate 8% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a more favorable but still muted 50% audience score—the movie proved to be financially successful, grossing over $84.1 million against a $20 million budget.

Crafted under the direction of Mennan Yapo and penned by Bill Kelly, Premonition has recently emerged on Hulu’s daily top 10 chart, marking a notable entry for a film from the 2000s. After joining Hulu on March 15, it debuted at No. 7 on March 24, climbing to No. 5 by March 26 and 27, before settling at No. 6 by the time of this writing. Remarkably, it is the highest-ranking film from the 2000s to appear on the platform.

The titles occupying the upper ranks of the top chart are all recent releases from the 2020s, including the Oscar-nominated film A Complete Unknown and the Best Picture winner Anora. Below is the current list of the top 10 movies trending on Hulu:

What This Means for Premonition

Sandra Bullock Is Still a Strong Draw

Though Premonition enjoyed success in theaters, the current streaming popularity is unlikely to propel it towards a sequel. Nevertheless, the combined success of Premonition and The Proposal on Hulu highlights the continued interest in Sandra Bullock films among viewers. This trend could bode well for Bullock’s potential return to prominent film roles, especially since her last significant appearance was a brief role in the 2022 film Bullet Train. This followed a reciprocal cameo by Brad Pitt in her romantic comedy The Lost City.
