In an exciting announcement, Jagex has unveiled RuneScape: Dragonwilds, marking a new chapter in the franchise by transforming its iconic MMORPG elements into an immersive open-world survival experience. Since its debut in 2001, RuneScape has evolved from a simple browser-based game to a major player in the online gaming sector, amassing over $1 billion in revenue and expanding into web games, novels, and other media. With this upcoming spinoff, Jagex aims to offer players an entirely different gameplay experience.
Throughout its history, RuneScape has undergone several significant transformations, with its development timeline divided into three key eras: RuneScape Classic (2001), RuneScape 2 (2004), and the modern iteration, RuneScape 3. Additionally, Jagex re-released RuneScape 2 as Old School RuneScape, which remains actively supported. A new teaser trailer has now generated excitement for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, showcasing fresh adventures within the RuneScape universe.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds: An Innovative Open-World Survival Experience
According to a report from IGN, Jagex introduced RuneScape: Dragonwilds on Monday, setting it on a newly crafted continent within Gielinor. Players can join forces to explore this expansive world, refine their skills, and combat various adversaries. The game also boasts an array of skills for players to master, many of which are borrowed from the original RuneScape. Notably, an early access version is set to roll out in Spring 2025, with an in-depth preview scheduled for April 15.

The initial reveal showcased a wealth of nostalgic gameplay elements that long-term RuneScape fans will recognize. The “World Teaser Trailer”highlighted several iconic locations from RuneScape, including a tower reminiscent of the Wizard’s Tower and a windmill akin to the one in Lumbridge. The game also appears to repurpose RuneScape’s familiar “Runes”for a variety of novel combat and exploration applications.
With RuneScape: Dragonwilds, Jagex is taking a significant leap into a new gaming territory while continuing to enhance its existing titles. Recently, the studio shared a roadmap for future content in RuneScape 3 extending through early 2026, which includes introducing a new region, Havenhythe. Meanwhile, Old School RuneScape embraced an exciting development by adding its first new skill, Sailing, earlier this month. It’s indeed an exhilarating time for fans, as they prepare for the new adventures that await in RuneScape: Dragonwilds.
