Overview of Spider-Man: Brand New Day
- Tom Holland is set to tackle two villains in Spider-Man 4.
- Steven Yeun is rumored to portray Mr. Negative, while Sara Snook may take on the role of a female villain.
- Yeun’s potential character is thematically linked to a role he was initially linked to in Thunderbolts—Sentry.
Tom Holland is gearing up to reprise his iconic role as Spider-Man in the eagerly anticipated Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Insights from a movie insider reveal that Holland’s Peter Parker will confront two adversaries in this latest installment of the beloved franchise.
Holland’s portrayal of the web-slinger has garnered a loyal fan base, making him the most notable Spider-Man actor to date. Following the success of three Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) solo films—Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)—Holland is ready to step back into the superhero’s shoes for a fourth time. Recently, industry insider Jeff Sneider shared insights during a podcast episode of The Hot Mic, discussing the possible villains that Spider-Man will face in this upcoming film.
During his conversation with John Rocha, Sneider suggested a prominent villain as well as a secondary female antagonist: “The word on the street is Mr. Negative is the villain. That is what’s supposed to be going on, and then there’s a secondary female villain.”Additionally, Rocha hinted that Steven Yeun is being considered for the role of Mr. Negative. Sneider affirmed this possibility, noting that Yeun, known for his role in Beef, was originally slated to appear in the MCU’s Thunderbolts.
It’s noteworthy that Yeun left the Thunderbolts project last year due to conflicts with his schedule. The ongoing disruptions caused by the pandemic and Hollywood strikes resulted in a packed filming agenda when productions resumed. While stepping back from Thunderbolts, Yeun expressed openness to joining the MCU again in future projects. Meanwhile, Stephen Oyoung, the voice of Mr. Negative in Marvel’s Spider-Man video game, expressed excitement over the rumors surrounding Mr. Negative’s appearance, despite not being contacted by Sony regarding the role.
Why Two Villains Fit Well Within the Spider-Man Franchise

Sneider’s assertion about Spider-Man often facing multiple villains resonates well with the franchise’s history. For instance, in Spider-Man: Homecoming, the primary antagonist Adrian Toomes, also known as Vulture (portrayed by Michael Keaton), was supported by Hernan Schultz, aka Shocker (Bokeem Woodbine). Similarly, Spider-Man: Far From Home featured Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) alongside the Elementals—holographic adversaries manipulated by Mysterio himself. Spider-Man: No Way Home included an ensemble cast of villains, with Norman Osborn/Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) taking center stage, flanked by notable foes such as Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) and Electro (Jamie Foxx).
Steven Yeun stepping into the role of Mr. Negative would be particularly intriguing, as it aligns with thematic elements explored in both Thunderbolts and the character of Mr. Negative. Although distinctly different, Mr. Negative and Sentry share the trope of duality. Mr. Negative embodies two personas: the altruistic Martin Li and the ruthless crime lord Mr. Negative, while Sentry grapples with the dichotomy of being a superhero and his dark counterpart, the Void. Both characters explore the complexities of light versus dark, and possess manipulation powers that could translate well to the cinematic universe. Mr. Negative wields his “Negative Touch,”which can corrupt adversaries, while the Void exerts control over reality and people’s fears.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is slated to premiere in theaters on July 31, 2026, promising to deliver thrilling content for fans worldwide.
