Path of Exile 2 is set to introduce a highly anticipated feature: the ability to respec your Ascendancy. This exciting change is scheduled to be implemented with an upcoming patch, expected to roll out after April 14. For players unfamiliar with the mechanics, Ascendancies serve as the subclass system in this acclaimed action RPG, playing a crucial role in character builds. Previously, selecting an Ascendancy meant making a permanent choice, with no options for modifications or exchanges between subclasses.
The impending patch promises to alter this dynamic, and in this article, we will explore all the details shared by the developers regarding this new capability.
Understanding Ascendancy Respeccing in Path of Exile 2

The option to reset Ascendancies is already present in the original Path of Exile, and Path of Exile 2 will adopt a similar method. To respec your Ascendancy, players must first ensure that no Ascendancy points have been allocated and then complete an Ascendancy Trial.
Both the Trial of Sekhemas (Sanctum) and the Trial of Chaos (Ultimatum) can be utilized for this process. However, it’s essential to participate in these trials at a level that does not award additional Ascendancy Points.
For example, if you have two Ascendancy Points attributed to your character as a result of completing a single-floor Trial of Sekhemas, here’s the required procedure:
- Consult with The Hooded One to respec your two Ascendancy Points.
- Engage in another single or double-floor Trial of Sekhemas featuring the Djinn Barya. Avoid trials with three or more floors, as they will typically grant additional Ascendancy Points, which will not facilitate resetting your Ascendancy.
- Upon defeating the floor boss Rattlecage, interact with the Ascension Device. Provided you have no committed Ascendancy Points, a prompt will allow you to select any available Ascendancy for your character class.
This system permits players to reset their Ascendancy multiple times, offering the opportunity to experiment with various subclasses within the same character.
As of now, it remains unclear if players can access the respec feature through lower-level Sanctum or Ultimatum runs. We will update this article as soon as the patch that introduces this feature is live in Path of Exile 2.
Additionally, the forthcoming patch intends to improve accessibility to Trials of Chaos for acquiring Ascendancy Points. Players can expect the following changes:
- Ultimatums with 7 chambers, which yield up to 4 Ascendancy points, will now be accessible starting from level 55 instead of 60.
- Ultimatums with 10 chambers that grant up to 6 Ascendancy points can now be completed from level 65, down from the previous requirement of level 75.
