WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Moana 2.
The sequel to Disney’s beloved Moana, titled Moana 2, expands the vibrant world introduced in the 2016 original film. Featuring voice talents such as Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, this new entry also showcases the skills of Awhimai Fraser, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Alan Tudyk, and Jermaine Clement. Released in theaters on November 27, 2024, Moana 2 achieved an impressive domestic five-day Thanksgiving gross of $221 million, setting a record previously held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
In this captivating sequel, Moana embarks on a transformative journey across the vast seas of Oceania after receiving an urgent summons from her ancestors. Leaving her cherished home of Motunui, Moana sets out on a quest to reunite the oceanic people. The narrative unfolds to reveal that a malevolent storm god named Nalo has sunk a vital connecting island, Motufetu, to isolate the islanders. Moana’s mission is clear: to locate Motufetu and restore unity among the ocean’s inhabitants. With the unwavering support of her closest friends and family, Moana ultimately fulfills her ambitions by the film’s conclusion.
As it stands, Moana 2 is currently screening in theaters.
6 Kele
Played by David Fane

Kele emerges as one of the elders from Motunui in Moana 2, characterized by his mostly grumpy nature and a tendency to be nonverbal, which ultimately renders him somewhat forgettable. Voiced by David Fane, known for his roles in Our Flag Means Death and Next Goal Wins, Kele’s passion lies not in adventure but in tending to his plants, as noted by D23. It remains uncertain if Kele will return for Moana 3, though it seems likely he will have a reduced presence if he does.
While Kele’s grumpy demeanor provides contrast to the lively cast surrounding him, he mainly recedes into the background and shows little potential for substantial character development within the franchise.
5 Moni
Played by Hualalai Chung

Moni serves as a delightful sidekick to Moana throughout the sequel, making a notable impact, despite sharing the background with Kele. Voiced by Hualalai Chung from NCIS Hawai’i, Moni is characterized as a passionate storyteller and a devoted admirer of Maui, resembling his “mini-me.” Given his optimistic demeanor, he could evolve into a more permanent member of Moana’s crew.
If Disney chooses to explore a Maui-centric spin-off, integrating Moni would be a natural fit since he idolizes Maui. The potential for Moni to develop into a love interest for Moana also presents intriguing narrative possibilities that could unfold in future installments.
4 Matangi
Played by Awhimai Fraser

Matangi stands out as the primary antagonist in Moana 2. Voiced by Awhimai Fraser, Matangi represents the only significant villain in the film. Described on Disney Wiki as a bat-themed demigoddess, she serves as Nalo’s enforcer, harboring centuries of resentment from her imprisonment.
Matangi possesses remarkable superhuman powers that could be expanded in future installments. Her agility, ability to fly, and enhanced strength enhance her appeal as a formidable antagonist. Given her strained relationship with Nalo, potential character development in Moana 3 may see her aligning with Moana, thereby deepening the narrative.
3 Loto
Played by Rose Matafeo

Loto emerges as a standout character in Moana 2, possessing the potential to become a loyal sidekick in Moana’s adventures. Voiced by Rose Matafeo, who has gained recognition for her work in Starstruck, Loto is the “brainy yet quirky”member of the team responsible for maintaining the ship during their quest for Motufetu.
Her unique skill set positions her as a key player in upcoming stories, especially as Moana transitions into a demigoddess herself. Loto’s evolving character could solidify her as an essential companion to Moana in future narratives.
2 Nalo
Played by Tofiga Fepulea’i

Nalo, portrayed by Tofiga Fepulea’i, is the film’s central antagonist, making his human form appearance only in the mid-credits scene. Though his physical presence is minimal, his storm powers serve as the greatest threat to Moana and her crew throughout the film. Remarkably, Nalo was also a presence in the first movie, as his curse restricted Moana’s connections with other islanders.
The climax of Moana 2 sets the stage for Moana and her allies to confront Nalo head-on, especially as they unify several island communities against his destabilizing influence. Although his character has been shrouded in mystery thus far, it promises a deeper exploration of his motivations and personality in the anticipated Moana 3.
1 Simea
Played by Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda

Moana’s younger sister, Simea, adds a fresh dynamic to the franchise despite having a limited role due to her staying behind on Motunui during Moana’s expedition. Seen as a humorous and sassy addition, Simea’s interactions with Moana showcase the deep bond between the two siblings, culminating in a heartfelt reunion.
The groundwork laid in Moana 2 indicates that Simea will likely have a more significant role in future narratives, particularly in Moana 3. As the storyline progresses, the love and connection between the two sisters could serve as a central theme, especially if the timeline shifts to allow Simea’s character to evolve further. Thus far, her impactful presence signifies a bright future for Lambert-Tsuda’s acting career.
