In a recent discussion about The Last of Us Season 2, actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey opened up about the significant emotional divide between their characters, Joel and Ellie. This highly anticipated sequel builds on the foundation laid by Season 1, which vividly portrayed the evolving relationship between Joel (played by Pascal) and Ellie (played by Ramsey) in a desolate, post-apocalyptic landscape. The climax of Season 1 culminated in a shocking decision by Joel to eliminate the Fireflies to save Ellie, a choice accompanied by a web of deceit as he failed to reveal the truth to her.
During a press conference covered by ScreenRant, both Pascal and Ramsey reflected on the reasons behind this rift and the complexities involved in bringing it to life on screen. According to Ramsey, Ellie’s growth—a progression from age 14 to 19—plays a critical role in this new dynamic. The teenage years are formative, and Ramsey notes that while age is a factor, there are “deeper reasons for their little rift.”The pair also shared that their genuine friendship made it challenging to enact the discord between their characters.
Bella Ramsey: We just had to not like each other for a bit.
Pedro Pascal: You had to not like me, which came easy.
Ramsey: So easy. Yes, obviously a lot has changed over those five years. Ellie was 14 and now is 19. I think, in any teenager’s life, that’s always the formative years, so that definitely informed it. But there’s obviously deeper reasons for their little rift. I didn’t enjoy feeling estranged from Pedro within a scene. It wasn’t a nice feeling.
Pascal: When the cameras were rolling.
Ramsey: When the cameras were rolling. In real life, we still kind of like each other, just about. It was definitely interesting.
Pascal: On a practical level, my first day on set, I feel like it was a beautiful set up by Craig and Neil that the first thing that I got to shoot anyway was just [Bella] and I and in kind of an intimate setting. And there’s an incredibly painful distance between the two of them in the playing of the scene, but we still got to be on set and f–k around and laugh and stuff like that, and that was incredibly comforting. That was like coming home.
My mindset was grateful to be back. And yet at the same time, it’s this experience, more than any other I’ve had, that is hard for me to separate what the characters are going through and how it makes me feel. In a way that isn’t very healthy. And so, I kind of feel their pain and I suppose I was in an unhealthy mindset.
Implications for The Last of Us Season 2
Evolving Dynamics Between Joel and Ellie

The shifting relationship dynamics between Joel and Ellie are expected to cast a new light on the narrative of Season 2. While the season will continue to explore their bond, Pascal and Ramsey emphasize that their connection will fundamentally differ due to both the passage of time and the unresolved tension stemming from Joel’s lie.
As the storyline progresses, Ellie will inevitably uncover the truth about Joel’s actions, setting the stage for a confrontation that will further strain their relationship. This impending clash promises to inject a new layer of emotional conflict into the series, which may be even more gripping than the introduction of new infected variants. Additionally, the character of Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, will add further complications to the narrative, influencing both Joel’s and Ellie’s arcs.
